i had a discussion with one of those re-conquistadores over them trying to re-take California, Nevada, Colorado, etc and whatever and return them to Mexico.
Basic position: "They were Mexico's, and you stole them from Mexico."
I asked him how Spain had obtained Mexico, and he seemed unaware of the goings-on in that affair.
I then inquired whether he knew about the Treaty of Hidalgo-Guadalupe, and he had never heard of it. That treaty was pretty fair as far as the usual "by right of conquest" positions go. The residents of the affected areas had the privilege of staying and becoming citizens of the US if they desired. Others were paid to move if they wanted to, as I recall.
He was having none of it and I figured if he was louder than I was and weighed around 16 stone, he must be in the right, so I disengaged from the situation as best I could and accepted "defeat."
