Sub $200 22cal pellet rifle
« on: April 03, 2016, 09:52:01 PM »
Looking for suggestions on a quiet, accurate 22cal pellet gun. Needs to be enough velocity to dispatch up to a medium sized rabbit.

I have an RWS-34 in .177.  It was less than $200 and has plenty of power to kill a large wabbit, but it does not do so cleanly. (using a better pellet helps)  Maybe if I was a better shot...  The varmint often runs off and dies in the neighbor's yard and I have to fetch it before their kids find it.  I'm sure the same gun in .22 caliber would be more than enough.

Do want a clean kill. I have a pump up sub $50 .177 that last year I killed 6 rabbits with. Cleanly. Yesterday I shot two and one was 5 pellets the other was 10. Don't want it running off. I'm a good shot with a quality gun. Only make head shots. Don't want them screaming!

I get one-shot kills, but they are not fast enough kills.  Through-and-through body shots, usually.  The last few that I've killed have been DRT; I switched to hollow-point pellets.

ETA: They are not sub-$200 anymore.

I had an old Benjamin .22 air rifle as a kid that used to kill pigeons DRT. Holy cow those are expensive these days.

How about this? http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/ruger-air-magnum-22-cal-air-rifle-with-4x32mm-scope?a=979241

.22 CBs or shorts in your existing .22 rifle.  That's the cheapest.  =)

Yes! Much quieter than air rifles as well with CCI CB caps.

I recently put together a purpose gun, one for killing collered dove. I used a Marlin 981T tube fed bolt gun, a Cabela's scope and a settled on CCI 22 LR Quiet. They are pushed along about 740fps. All of my shots are inside of 35 yds and they do a very good job. I am sure they would be just as good on rabbits. I tried HV shorts but they were too erratic. The LR Quiet work very nicely and are consistent.

Hmm I'll have to try that. I have a bolt action single shot from my late father in law.

Thanks!

Where I live the pellet gun is legal, but using a .22 (even a quiet one) is not.  The pellet guns were illegal too, but His Honor the mayor was having varmint problems so they changed the law.

Yeah, I'm aware of the legalities, but in most jurisdictions the law doesn't discriminate between airguns and firearms, so might as well use what's quietest. Although the authorities might still cut you a break for an airgun. That's a gamble.

If you can set up your shooting position a few feet back from a window or open door, it's much much quieter too.

If you don't have a can, the CCI Quiet-22 runs about 710 feet per second and is very quiet out of a rifle.

I used to use my house as a 'silencer.' Crack the back patio door open and shoot from >5 feet back.
Rabbits in the far corner of the garden were about 35 yards away- a bit of a a lob for a CB cap, but just have to know the holdovers- used a soda can at varying distances to figure out where it would shoot.

Original tests were done with a lawnmower running outside to cover up any excess sound- ex would shoot, and I'b be outside to listen.
I was inside village limits, but there was nothing but corn fields and marsh for a mile behind my house, and all my shots were done at a downward angle towards a creek bed.
Oddly enough, I live out in the country now and and couldn't take shots like that because a housing development/subdivision 1/4 mile behind my house...

Small crossbow pistol?
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Where are you?  Depending on the place, a trapper permit and snares might end up being a lot cheaper.

Of course, snaring neighborhood cats might not go over well, so live traps are often preferred if anyone is likely to see what's going on.

Okay, a crossbow with cheaper bolts.  Don't need the fancy broad heads.

I hunt with a crossbow due to having bad shoulders, they aren't as cool as one would think. Quite large in the hand and a bitch to conceal if the neighbors start peeking.
