I still think "shrapnel" for not only the bullet fragments, but the ancillary projecta from the concrete, etc, it hit, is an acceptable descriptor, especially bearing in mind column-inch restrictions.

So there.  Nyah.   [popcorn]

Column-inches equate to time on the radio.

Shrapnel and fragment both two syllable words and take the same time to say.

<beating expired horse>
So fragment is less threatening than shrapnel, I guess.  OK, I give up.

"Shrapnel" is not equivalent to fragment.

Splinter is equivalent to fragment.

^ Okay, okay.

Not a noob, but been shootin'  and whatnot for 60 years and still remember when such fine and delicate nuances and  distinctions were not part of the common parlance.

So I still think "shrapnel" was a perfectly legitimate use in that article.
