Fresno police are working with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to track down illegal, Chinese-made devices that convert a Glock semi-automatic pistol into a fully automatic weapon capable of firing a burst of bullets in seconds.
Automatic weapons, which can fire multiple rounds with a single trigger pull, have been illegal in the United States since passage of a federal law in the 1930s. (not illegal: restricted, but I digress) Legal semi-automatic weapons require that a trigger be pulled for each shot. The emergence of inexpensive devices that can modify a semi-automatic Glock, one of the most popular handguns in the U.S., to automatic fire has caught the attention of law enforcement.
...
Dyer said the conversion process used to modify the weapons is relatively simple and does not require the expertise of a gunsmith.
The difficulty of getting the modified guns off the street is made more complex because the conversion devices are not manufactured domestically; they are produced in China. So police are working with the ATF to track websites where they are offered for sale.
Random thoughts:
Amused that these devices are supposedly showing up on Amazon.
Wondering what the legality of possession of such a device, without the firearm, would be. Akin to possession of an auto sear?
Not sure if this conversion is truly full-auto or creates a slam-fire condition. I would need to examine the device more closely . . . for research purposes . . .

It makes your Glock - fully - semiautomatic.

And here I thought they were turning them into semi- fully automatic

When does the Hi Point version come out?

Is this the Airsoft device made to make Airsoft "Glocks" F/A but that "just happens" to work in real guns?

Glock auto sears are even more stupidly easy to make than AR lightening links. Anyone with a modicum of mechanical sense and a Glock to look at could make one from scratch in an afternoon, but these are ready to go. They popped up on a couple builders groups I'm in on FB, and the general consensus was the folks posting them had to be ATF plants.
That said, if I wanted a really impressive drive-by weapon, an auto G17(18) in a Roni, with a 100rd drum would be a pretty decent choice. Jus' Sayin'

Glocks with da switch..
Yeah, the BATFE started cracking down on these backplates a month or so ago.
-
And a liberal push to ban civilian Glock ownership coming in 3...2...1...

Only a month or so ago? It sure took 'em long enough - I remember seeing FA conversion backplates at least 10 years ago. (Maybe the BATmen were just waiting until enough people fell for their trap so they'd have a larger group to go after? [tinfoil] )

I am sure the police departments will be at the lead of that movement.

That is a good point about the Roni. Upgrades like that make a full auto pistol more useful.
I can't imagine going full auto on my Glock 22 in 40 S&W. I might be able to hit the ground. Can't guarantee anything else.
-
Yes, they were on Amazon... and on ebay too!
https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/09/14/want-to-make-your-glock-full-auto/
I wonder how many of them made it into the USA. I'm guessing a lot.

Yep, buy one of those plus a ‘cleaning trap adaptor’, its the ‘pound me in the ass prison’ special buy.

Maybe that's why they hold them sideways.

Yeah. =D Aim to the right and end up pointing to the left.
-
Don't these gangbangers realize that conversion to full auto is illegal?
???
Somebody ought to tell them.

Nah - they hold them sideways because that's the way they came out of the box. Duh.

Yes, possession is illegal, and arrests have been reported.
That business of "constructive possession" has got to be beat down hard.
-
Use to, or maybe still can, get them off of Wish.
-
Constructive possession need to go away.
In what may be an extreme "what if" scenario... How many of us are in "constructive possession" of bomb making materials? Reloading supplies, black powder, plumbing parts, canon fuse....Not to mention the more common household chemicals that can be used for destructive purposes.

The conversion in use, with infra-red monitoring of gun temperature:

FYI only; I did not watch the whole thing. I do not know if the demonstrator is a "qualified customer" or any of the legal consequences of this activity, so don't ask me.

Better yet, just reopen the registry then the issue is just "Hey, you forgot to register that."
Not the best thing, just better.

Best yet, just repeal NFA '34.

Pressure cookers ...
BAN PRESSURE COOKERS! IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN!

So they can be digitally-printed now?
Worms. Cans thereof. Open.
Yeah, repeal '34 and let us go back to a more peaceful time before booze was illegal.
Damned busybody do-gooders.

Not sure how long a 3D printed one would last, as there's some heat there, but I could knock one out out of aluminium pretty quick.

Under federal law a shoelace may be considered an automatic weapon.
The law gets mighty murky when absurd bright line rules are accepted and the enforcement arms of the government are trusted for their discretion. But current law is anything that may be used to convert a semi automatic weapon into an automatic weapon counts as possession of an automatic weapon; even without the automatic weapon it purports to convert, without needing to actually be functional, and existing in whole or part. The specific court ruling was indeed, a shoelace counts. DOJ's position was copy pasted into the court ruling.
State law; depends on the state.
-
I've mentioned that shoelace matter several times recently expecting it to be questioned. But I think the BATpeople may have backtracked on that one.
I believe it's the same kind of thing with any bolt with a permanently protruding firing pin.
So if you're thinking of building a firearm firing from the open bolt position with a protruding firing pin, you'd better check with BATF. I think it's a machinegun regardless of how the rest of the mechanism prevents it from firing more than once with one trigger pull.

Yeah. You are not allowed to build a semi-auto open bolt firearm.
