Texas APS gathering this year?
« on: August 12, 2010, 08:49:26 AM »
Okay so we should have a Texas meet and greet this year.  Obviously, its a big state, and we're pretty scattered.  Maybe somewhere in the hill country.  Ideas?

 ... Ideas?

Late enough in the year so that we can enjoy the weather. 11/1 or later is my vote. The northern side of hill country would be the area geographically most centrist to the largest % of Texans at large.

As much as I'd like to do a shootin-greet, it seems the most flexibility would be in the state parks system.  I found a couple centrally located parks in the hill country like Inks Lake. Many have cabins, campsites and RV sites.

I was thinking Novemeber.  Although, it is hunting season, but the weather should be cool enough.

Freebird's burritos?

I'll second that.

Where do all the TX APSers live?

I'm just west of Austin myself . . .

Just south of Houston in Pearland.

Anyone know when opening day for deer season is?

ETA:
Looks like Nov 6 +/- is the start of deer season.

Considering the distances apart most of us are, I'm thinking a camping trip.

Dates that I could organize something:

Oct 30
Nov 6 (But that is the start of deer season)
Dec 4
Dec 11

Those are all Saturdays.  If we picked one, we could start looking at locations.
My proposal is a campground in the hill country.  My plan would be leaving here on friday, staying through sunday, with Saturday being the "official" meet and greet day.
Since there probably aren't alot of places where we can just shoot, I was thinking maybe one of the state parks with hiking and fishing opportunities.  Inks Lake looks promising.  If we're looking into Dec, I'd like to go to the Guadalupe for some fly fishing, so any of the private campgrounds or maybe the state park there.

Thoughts?

I think it's the first full weekend of November, so the 6-7th?

If you're looking for a state park, Guadalupe State Park is excellent, but it might be out of your way.  It is north of San Antonio, just west of Canyon Lake.

If the weather's nice, and I could find some place around Evant to overnight, I could actually manage to cycle to Inks Lake.  Two days out, one there and two back shouldn't be too bad.
