Was just out fussing with the garden, training sugar snap peas up the lattice work and whatnot.  Started talking to the neighbor over the fence, she does not believe in gardening for food because she doesn't know where the dirt has been and what could be in it.    ???  My brain hurts now.

Well, if you live in Ukraine, it might sort of maybe make sense.

No, no. Tell her you bought it at the local co-op and that it's certified organic.

Gotta love how we classify the vast majority of our vegetable and animal food as non-organic, but an amalgamation of substances that includes a large proportion of minerals can be "organic."  Strange times.

My standard response to the "Is that organic?" question is:

I'm pretty sure there's a carbon molecule in there somewhere.

I bet she only buys her meat at the grocery store where no animals have been hurt.

Tell her the dirt is 100% au naturale bovine skat.  It don't get more natural than that.

I can actually see that, in some circumstances.   "Where exactly did they get the landscaping dirt for your nicely sculpted new subdivision?"  (There's an old superfund cleanup site at the edge of town here.  Old Burgess battery factory.)

You just need to start explaining all the govt regulations on dirt at farms and such where food is grown.  I'm sure you can make up something good.   =)

I remember an incident in Tel-Aviv where a subcontractor did not want to pay money for quality sand  -apparently sand differs in qualities - and simply brought sand he scooped up somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

He introduced termite eggs to at least a dozen homes.

Not out of the realm of possibility. A few months back the EPA was looking to regulate dust from farms caused by plowing as a pollutant.

I could somewhat understand if you lived in redneckville where everybody and their brother drained their car oil and tranny fluid.  My wife wants to know what this lady has been doing in the dirt?  Maybe you could set up a camera and sell photos and videos online.  :O =D
