I remember some years back, a company was making a spoiler for a Pinto.

They claimed that at higher legal speeds, it would generate a good amount of downforce with only a modest amount of drag . . . but of course, on a Pinto, even a modest amount of drag might keep it from reaching the higher legal speeds in the first place.

Seems like we go through this every so often, when a new crop of undocumented guest workers learn that if you pay the $103 down but give them phoney names, addresses and other ID you may never have to make another payment.

Apparently adding a spoiler helps you drive a consistent 7.25 mph below the posted speed limit - tactic devised not to actually impede traffic but to ensure that you are never pulled over for speeding, because once that happens the cops (state & local) will run your immigration status, and the locals will keep you in jail long enough for a full terrorist background check to be completed before you can even think about going to trial.

You know what amazes me about those photos, Bedlamite? (After I finished laughing, of course). It's not that the owners obviously don't have much or any money. It's that they actually took a fair amount of time and deliberately made something absolutely ridiculous.

It's like seeing a beater car with a giant "Ford" or "Toyota" sticker across the front windshield. The person actually took the time to buy the thing and put it on a piece of junk.

That just mystifies me.

I actually did something similar on a Subaru wagon a few years ago. It was a friends car that he was running in an enduro in the compact class. I finished welding in his roll cage, we had a few beers, and you can figure out the rest. The tech guys (after laughing their AO) let us keep the wing, but made us take off the coffee can tailpipe and hood scoop.
