Title: So what would you ask the man?
Post by: Gewehr98 on February 17, 2007, 01:59:11 PM
I've got an opportunity to meet and talk to the Dalai Lama next month. Besides the "Some weather we're having here, ain't it?" or "Hi, I'm Lutheran, what's your story?", type of question, what would you ask somebody like that?  (I keep thinking he'll answer, "42!")    grin

Seriously, ask him if he thinks that we'll see peace _and_ freedom within our lifetimes - and pass on my condolences for what has been happening in Tibet.

yea, I'd ditto on Bogie's sentiments and maybe extend our wishes that he will soon be able to safely return to his homeland.

Yeah, that Tibet thing's bad news, and precisely why I wouldn't ask him if he likes Chinese food.   sad

Shouldn't you ask him, "what is the meaning of life?"

Betcha $1 his answer to "What is the meaning of life?" will be "Not knowing."

It's a tie for me between Carebear's and Bogie's. Decisions, decisions... But seriously, peace or mass destruction?

Wow!

If I had my choice of meeting the Dali Llama or any US President since Truman, I'd pick the Dali Llama in a heartbeat.

My belief system is very Bhuddist-leaning.  I don't venerate him as a religious leader, but from what I've read or seen of him during interviews he's an exceptionally good man.  Great sense of humor and doesn't take himself too seriously.

If I had a chance to speak to him, I would wish him happiness and enlightenment.

I don't think I would have any questions for him.  I doubt that he would have any specific answers to any "cosmic" questions.  It's my path and my kharma to find my own answers.

1.  What do you mean?  That there would be no war and no oppresion in the world?

2.  What if he said yes?

3.  Would yes be a rational answer?

Ask him how a man dedidicated to bringing non-violent enlightenment to the world feels about the 2nd Amendment; given the history of genocide and oppression in the 20th century, does he see the American version of the right and means to self-defense as fundamental, or at worst, as the lesser of evils?

What, you wanted an easy one?  smiley

He has said he supports self-defense. I'll see if I can find some documentation.

Found this:

Dalai Lama: Individual case? For example, if mad dog coming, almost certain now bite you. Then if you say, non-violence, non-violence and compassion&

Hana Gartner: You get bitten!

Dalai Lama: That's kind of foolish! You have to take use of self-defence. But without harming, without serious harming another, I think that's the way I feel. If someone try to shoot on you, then there is no possibility to run away, then you have to hit back. Then possibly not on head, but leg or something like that. So that's not serious hit back, but more lenient way, more gentle way.

and this

According to the Dalai Lama, If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.262

He's actually gone on record to state that defending one's self via violent means is acceptable when all other options fail.

I think I'll offer him my condolences and prayers that he will someday see his native Tibet again.

Why does the Perfection of Man need to wear glasses?

I tried to ask him this when he was in Bloomington last at the big Buddhist temple there but could not get past Steven Segal. police

How is it you are going to meet him?  Are you expecting some kind of enlightenment from the man, or are you just curious?

Not to knock the man, as I don't know anything about him, but has this fellow said or done anything really note-worthy?  Or is he lauded mainly for being considered the reincarnation of - uh, who was it?  Like I said, I don't know anything about him.

280, I tried, but I could not bend his arm. grin

(Sorry, inside martial arts joke, an Aikido joke.  Aikido has this goofy "unbendable arm" thing that they took from Taiqiquan).

 cheesy

Is that anything like the "Touch of Death"

That used to be the joke between me and my tae kwon do kid, every so often I'd ask him, "So, learned the Touch of Death yet?"  Always good for a laugh.

Sometimes jokes DO need to be explained!

Gewehr, if that Segal guy is around and gets in your way you twist him up!  Give him one for me too. grin

I've read he's a pretty decent shot with an air rifle, and that he has a deep appreciation for fine watches and timepieces.

I wouldn't miss an opportunity to meet him. Wish I had the chance to do so.

Regards,
Rabbit.

I was in Tibet on a climbing trip about 6 years ago. The Tibetan people were great. The Chinese military were so horrible I found myself wishing there were a way to flush them all at once.
