From a THR post, Dave McCracken has passed away...
« on: November 08, 2012, 04:45:52 PM »
From THR:

Dave McCracken has been a moderator here on THR since day one. Day in and day out, he performed a tireless task and placed his indelible stamp upon our forum. We are better for his contribution. We would not be the community we are without his labors.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Dave is no longer with us. He passed in the night, painlessly.

Wow, that's terrible news. I always really enjoyed his common sense advice about shotguns.

Agreed on both counts.  =(

I think everybody needs to take out their Remington 870 (buy one if necessary) to the range this weekend.   [ar15]

Very sad news. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I always liked how he related his expert advice on shotgunning in such a non-condescending way, even to people that deserved a little condescension.

I got to talk to him once, and he was the real thing. No attitude, just a great guy. I saw some pretty lame questions asked in the shotgun forum, but he never laid into anybody.

He'll be missed for sure.

He was pretty much the only reason I'd go to THR.....another good one gone...

Mike and I got to shoot with him once several years ago.  He is just as friendly and gracious in person.

I remember a story from before he retired.

He was talking shotguns with a co-worker -- his boss, I think -- and somewhere in the conversation he recommended some of the material from THR for guidelines.

The guys said something like, "yeah, I've read that stuff . . . wait . . . YOU'RE Dave McCracken?  THAT Dave McCracken?"

Guy had been working with Dave and never had a clue.

Condolences and prayers for his family

RIP. I've had some discussions with him on THR, always loved reading his posts. Procrastination bites again, I was not far from him and always wanted to pay him to go through a pallet of ammo with me and teach me to wingshoot correctly.

THR was the first gun board I really spent a lot of time reading and posting. Dave McCracken was one of the people I always watched for and read carefully. He taught this clueless newbie a lot, and always seemed like the most decent sort of man. RIP sir.

As Chris noted, he and I shot with Dave several years ago, and later had dinner with him. A VERY enjoyable evening.

I managed to trounce him fairly handily at Wobble Trap, a fact about which I'm still very proud, but given it was his first time shooting it...

What really came through that entire evening, though, was just how much about shotgunning I learned just listening to Dave's off-handed comments, things that I've been able to employ to make my shooting better.

I really wish that we had been able to do some sporting clays, as I have no doubt that he would have been able to give me pointers that would have immensely improved my game there.
