Genuine Japanese Sake Only $860/oz!
« on: December 11, 2012, 10:22:16 PM »
Last week I spilled half an ounce of fine imported Japanese sake on my new $430 Acer laptop and bricked it.  I've disassembled it down to the motherboard and carefully dried out all the sticky gooey mess I could find, but there's still a short somewhere.  Oddly enough, it ran fine for 24 hours before refusing to start up again, so the system is mostly intact, I just can't find the short.

Does anyone have any advice for me?  My girlfriend suggested carefully cleaning the motherboard with rubbing alcohol, but I can't visually identify any damage.

Put it in the dishwasher?
Maybe order up a can of the circuit board safe cleaner and hose it down. That crud could be under an ic or something.

I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Wash it first with warm tapwater, then with deionized or distilled water.  BTDT, sometimes it works.  The DI water is important, to rinse away any residue and minerals.

Cleaning a computer board with water may sound strange but it will work or it is already fried.

I used to work on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City. I have cleaned and dried many boards and motors.

Thanks for the tips.  Should I pop out the CR-2032 first?

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

I almost forgot to update the thread.  The laptop is mostly fixed!  I couldn't figure out how to keep the keyboard connector attached during reassembly, but it works fine with an external USB keyboard.  The trick was to douse the motherboard with a gallon of distilled water, run a hair dryer over it on low for 20 minutes, and let it sit overnight.  Once I got the RAM in the right slot (herp derp) it booted right up!

Thanks again to everyone who suggested ideas.  It was appreciated.

Yes.  It also prevents STDs if applied within 17 minutes of contact.
