Thought I'd start a general topic on the confirmation hearings starting today. Keeping in mind that Obama's appointments pretty much breezed through, it'll be interesting to see how this dog and pony show goes.
Sessions is up first. So far I've seen that Cory Booker, for the first time in history, will be one Senator testifying against another senator. Nevermind that Sessions worked with Booker on race issues. Also there are punks dressed in KKK sheets, Code Pink, etc. in the audience. Plus right now I'm listening to Diane Feinstein listing a bunch of things an AG should not be, which coincidentally, seem to be describing the current and prior AGs.
-
I've been trying to watch/listen, but I think I have to give up. Every five freakin' minutes, some punk(s) in the audience stand up and start yelling until they're escorted out. When you see how they act, it seems difficult for a normal person not to want to end up supporting sessions more. I'm only going from memory, but I don't recall this childish activity during any dem confirmations. People may have something to say, but the generally use a different venue versus disrupting the floor to the annoyance of all.

This.

That's been a long-standing difference between the two sides. Even when we get out and protest, we do it in a much more orderly fashion.
-
Wife was watching it this morning, and was literally yelling at the TV at Sessions when he said he'd recuse himself from any Clinton cases.
-
One hopes the nitwits will continue with the aberrant behavior. More Democrats will fall by the wayside because of it. [popcorn]

I actually understand why he would have to do that, whether I like it or not. Certainly things at that point would hinge on his deputy(s).
I understand that there will be some fairly contentious 2nd amendment questioning. There's no way I'm listening through this whole thing to hear that. I wonder if there's any site that has some kind of indexed videos or audios of various subjects he responds to?

Tar and feathers make a huge mess if you're not careful when handling them.
-

And I suspect it is mentioned somewhere in "Rules for Radicals". That way when we say, "look, nobody went off the deep end with Obama's appointees", they can say "because they were such great picks, who would interrupt the hearings to protest them!?!".
-
True. There does seem to be an element of theater to it. The Left enjoys a friendly, collaborationist media that will put their antics in a sympathetic light, or at least report that those controversial Republicans are being protested again. Let us try that, and we're extremist, racist deplorables, trying to keep the Little Rock Nine out of the school-house, etc.

I only caught a minute of it, but Sessions said that crime is up in America.
Great. Another fear monger.
Violent crime is 16.5% lower than 10 years ago.

The headline on that story you link to says violent crime is up. I'm not sure what Sessions was referring to (did he mean long-term, or short-term?), but there has been an increase in violent crime, recently. The Ferguson Effect...

So much posturing
Short of him committing a felony and breaking 2 commandments during the questions he's a lock.all this is role playing for the constituents

Though I understand Tillerson will not be a lock. I heard mention, though I didn't hear names, that several Rs are looking at voting against. I haven't heard of any dems breaking with their party to cancel that out.

After the shellacking I got thinking trump was gonna lose I am afraid to be too sure. But this is an insider deal. They are like key lawyers and doctors. They look out for their own.

Over a one year span. The overall trend of violent crime is down 16% in the last 10 years.

Changes in how agencies record and report crime can affect numbers. Much shenanigans there

And right there it says with the irregularities factored in there was still a drop in violent crime.

Not really trying to contradict but we need to remember, the same folks telling us crime is down are the same ones taking credit for making it happen.
I just have major trust issues with pretty much anything the government tells me. Particularly if it makes their ham handed, border line (at best) unconstitutional tactics look better.
I'm cautiously optimistic about Sessions as AG. Only time will tell but he has to be, just HAS TO BE better than Holder and Lynch.
-

Certainly better than Holder - that's an extremely low bar. While I obviously don't approve of Lynch, I'm not sure she has ever done anything "worse" than some AGs under Republican administrations - she's just done stuff I don't like. Holder clearly broke the law and crapped on the constitution.

Oddly enough, the recent spike in crime has pretty directly matched the BLM movement and the response by police in pulling back from, and in some cases out of, communities...
Funny how that working...
-
I didn't watch the hearing, so I had to look it up. I don't know which part of Sessions' remarks you're referring to, Jamis, but this is what I'm seeing in the transcript.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/10/us/politics/sessions-remarks-transcript.html
Drug use and murders are half what they were in 1980.
Right there, I think he's addressed your point. He acknowledges that crime rates have come down. He goes on to say:
I am very concerned, however, that the recent jump in the violent crime and murder rates are not anomalies, but the beginning of a dangerous trend that could reverse the hard won gains that have made America a safer and more prosperous place. The latest official F.B.I. statistics show that all crime increased nearly 4 percent from 2014 to 2015 with murders increasing nearly 11 percent — the largest single-year increase since 1971.

Just watching a bit of the Tillerson hearings. If this is political theater, the dude is the star of the show. Right now he's making Rubio look like a desperate 12 year old in his first debate.

Kind of to be expected. I am not a big Tillerson fan, but you don't get to be CEO of such a megacorp by being a shallow twit with a pretty face. Like Rubio.

ExxonMobile is a $268.88 billion company. $349.49 billion in assets. While they don't own as much oil as some state-owned companies, they are the largest refiner in the world.
This is the dollar equivalent of the GDPs of South Africa, Pakistan or Columbia. Not government revenue, THE ENTIRE GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT. If you took the GDPs of the bottom ninety or so countries, you'd be looking as a similar amount of money.
You don't get to be CEO of that sort of company by being a moron or being unable to handle stressful circumstances. That doesn't necessarily mean you want the guy in that position, but it doesn't automatically rule them out. I'd want to be dead certain that the man was being loyal to the country, not putting other things ahead of that.

Ted Cruz, in his element:

In the Senate chewing the butts off Democrats or on SCOTUS is where Ted belongs. Ted shouldn't get the Scalia slot, as that would be too easy. No, he needs to replace Ginsburg to maximize the number of exploded heads on the Left. Ted is only 46 years old. We could see him do his thing for DECADES on SCOTUS.

Yes, I was pretty impressed with him yesterday. I can't see any downsides to him in SCOTUS.

Certainly. I had immediate reservations when I first heard of the appointment. As I've read and seen more, I have to say he impresses me. In his postion, he will have to make clear his separation from his previous life. I think he'll be able to do it, though I believe there will always be gadflys that cast doubt into that.
That goes across the political spectrum I guess. For my own part, I'm certainly guilty of always looking at Obama as being a community organizer versus leaving that behind when he became president.

As to under reported crime stats.

An increase in justifiable homicides is still an increase in violent crime, wouldn't have ben a justifiable homicide with out some violent crime to justify.

"Can't be true unless confirmed by Buzzfeed."
Silly man. Everyone knows that Buzzfeed takes its fake news direction from Huffington Post and Politico.
And holy *expletive deleted*it, I've never paid any attention to Politico before, but I just visited their webpage...
There are multiple headlines for Trump stories, and with the exception of two that are fairly neutral, every one of them reads like the headline for a hatchet piece. They're all spun incredibly negatively.
I wish I had been paying attention to it over the last couple of years, especially during the election cycle.
I can only imagine the differential in the headlines...
"Hillary walks on water, cures the sick, and feeds a multitude with a pack of crackers"
"Trump kidnaps busload of small children, consumes their souls, and puts them to work as slaves in Trump Plaza kitchen."
And holy *expletive deleted*it, they have a story from May 2016 about how the GOP believes Hillary could cost Democrats in the Senate in the section titled Trump Transition.
How is old news that's going on a year old about the transition?
I think the GOP may be right. Politico isn't a newspaper -- it's a broadsheet for the DNC.
Just read some of the comments on various articles, too...
It's as if they simply linked in Democratic Underground.

The best part is that when Politico started, it was billed as a conservative outfit.
Then proceeded to go full establishment.

I was on a hike when I heard that from Sanders or I would have beat you to posting on it. What a freakin' hypocrite. I may have yelled out loud when I heard that line.
Also, Patty Murray was "special" in her grilling of Price. Is she thinking of running for prez in 2020 too?
I again have to applaud Trump's picks. Every one that I have heard was cool as a cucumber under the grilling, and making the dems (and a few Rs) look like spoiled children.

Rick Perry apparently had some groveling to do today in order to get his job:
"In fact, after being briefed on so many of the vital functions of the Department of Energy, I regret recommending its elimination."
-
Steve Mnuchin impressed the hell out of me this morning. He outsmarted every Dem attack on him, to include stuff like actually calling bad loans bad loans. The Dems seemed to think that was gonna be a gotchya, but he turned it around on them beautifully. To include, when he was interrogated about stuff like the "missed $1 on the payment so were foreclosed on" line, pointing out that those foreclosures were incredibly painful for him, because as a private lender, he could have kept them from happening, but because they were Freddie and Fannie, the fed.gov forced him to do so or face legal penalties. :)
Also Claire McCaskill was a pill. I only heard her while driving, but she sounded like she was calling 911 and reporting a murder. Every question was breathless and tense. It sounded like she was working up the vapors and in need of a fainting couch. She especially sounded out of sorts because Mnuchin was so calmly answering questions and deflecting her political statements.

Sgt. Borrelli has company. NYPD Officer Adrian Schoolcraft claims he was forcibly taken from his home and involuntarily put in a mental hospital where he spent six days — in retaliation for complaining his supervisors were cooking the books to make the crime rate seem lower.

Just read the first part, but it occurs to me this is just a natural reaction of a bureaucracy to negative statistics. If the numbers don't look good, the easiest solution is to find a way to make the numbers look better rather than fix the problem. The management drive from higher gets geared around the numbers rather than the work it is based on and the grunts at the bottom find it is easier to fudge a little rather than constantly catch grief from higher. With so much politics involved, add in that they probably know half the stuff they do will make the numbers look worse.
I have seen this with the statistics from maintenance management systems and the managers over those departments.
