For years, as most of you know, I have lived my life as an agnostic/atheist.
However, recently, due to a variety of reasons, especially, the religious influence of a close friend, I have altered my religious views.
Starting Sunday, I have self-identified as a Laveyan Satanist. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaVeyan_Satanism)
Tonight I have carried out my first Black Mass. Through the use of candles, an image of Baphomet, and a sharp knife, I have called upon Satan to grant me wisdom to comprehend the riddles I am facing in my life.
Whether through the inherent psychodrama of the thing, or through the flow of dark energies through my mind, I feel better now - calmer, happier, more enlightened. I do not pretend to claim I have immediately become wise, but certainly I have undergone a religious experience.
Time will tell if it has truly changed my life for the better.
Ave Satanas!
-
Well, good luck. Does it involve potluck dinners, bingo, etc?
-
Huh... (As in Mal opening the stasis crate and seeing River for the first time.)
I guess if that part of the world goes unexpectedly off-grid, we'll know something went tragically wrong...

Start communicating with The Old Ones and it sounds like the beginning of a MHI novel.

Never summon anything bigger than your head.
Out of curiosity, will you now be serving a mission in some odd place?

Only if you go knocking on doors with lots of pamphlets.

I guess that means you believe there is a god now. One step at a time.

No, Laveyan Satanism rejects the literal existence of God or Satan. Satan is a methaphorical construct in Laveyan Satanism, not a literal guy with horns. XD

Well, at least now you have something to keep you busy.

So you are still more or less an agnostic if not antheist? Oh well, I guess I will leave the fine distinctions to you.
Merry Christmas!

So have you been enjoying the wailing and gnashing of teeth soundtrack?

It takes tungsten carbide gonads to investigate these things dispassionately, divorced from one's upbringing and geography, free from fear of some pre-assumed retribution from On High.
I congratulate anyone who has that kind of nerve, whether they are being satirical or not.

Ayup. Satanism as it is usually practiced these days is essentially just aggressive atheism.

Closest to a black mass i ever got was a service at a black pentacostal church i was helping out. Three hours later came the chow and if you were not a believer before you were after supper. Soul food ftw.

It is certainly an evolutionary step up from the nihilistic anti philosophy of atheistic philosophical materialism.
Having an open mind not chained up by dogma (even atheist dogma) is healthy.

Nah, here's the appropriate soundtrack. (FWIW, I love this video!)

Well not quite right (there's still an occult element), but I'd just like to state that I in no way claim that my religious choice, in se, makes me smarter than people who do not share my religion.
(Mind you, I still believe my religion to be the right one, and that of other people to be false - but then again, so does everybody!)

Unfortunately fistful is right, it was originally called Duck Tape because it was developed by Johnson and Johnson for the military to seal ammo cans in WWII. Uncle Sam wanted a waterproof extra strong tape, J&J provided.
It became duct tape after the war when it was discovered that it made a great tape for sealing HVAC ducts.

Christianity makes no claims as to intelligence of adherents. It does make some wisdom claims though.

Unfortunately fistful is right....
Unpossible! It violates the laws of nature and of man! It portends cats and dogs sleeping together, the lamb laying down with the lion, and my ex-wife finally becomming a reasonable human being.
Regardless of the accuracy of the name of the product, or how/why/for whom it was developed, Fistful can not be right - it just aint natural!
stay safe.

Well crap does that mean that Birdman is going to step up his plans to autoclave the planet?

"Duck" tape for ammo cans?
Well, I think I get it. Like "water off a duck's back."
But why did they think they had to seal ammo cans with tape, since they're already well-sealed with a gasket under pressure between the lid and the can?
That one sounds fishy to me, sorta like it's really a PR "explanation" by the guys who make the tape that's actually branded as "Duck Tape."
I prefer the HVAC explanation.
Not that I'm self-righteous about it... it just sounds more intellectually satisfying. <meaningful big grin>

I think my religious beliefs are probably more offensive to most people than atheism or Satanism. Misotheism, maltheism or dystheism.
Essentially believing in the gods, but not necessarily worshiping them. Nor making the assumption that gods or any particular deity is particularly nice or good. In general or towards anything specific. Not saying that one should assume all gods or any particular deity are bad, just not making the automatic assumption that they are good.

What you and micro profess both fit in the context of my understanding of theism. Both concepts have been discussed and addressed historically. Self as god or many gods are just as old as monotheism in human writings. Regarding hating the god's; the reason the book of Job is in the Jewish and Christian canon is partly due to Job's refusal to curse God and die. It is a normal and natural inclination.
Just because there is one true God (what I believe) that doesn't mean there aren't lesser godlike beings (human beings included).
While Satanism does indeed seem to be basically theatrical atheism there does seem to be an occasional acknowledgment of a greater law or force in nature. A crack maybe in the veneer of pure materialistic philosophy?

The semi-official story is here: https://www.duckbrand.com/duck-tape-club/history-of-duck-tape A multi-purpose tape.
A much more prosaic story than anybody's flight of fancy.

Having worked for the only company that makes ammo cans for the DOD and observed that production down in Homerville, GA. I can assure you that the same process used in the 1930's is still being used today. (There has not been any "improvements" in the production process as it is very much a jobs program as it is a ammo can program.) All the cans are water tested to insure that they properly seal. Depending on how bad they leak, they are either scrapped or sold as defects. That is why I caution people when buying them, to insure that they have military markings on them. Those that are plain green are defects.

I imagine you can generally reseal them under most circumstances.

I have greatly enjoyed the recent antics of the "satanists". The militant religionists of modern America(to include, for example, those who wish to get special treatment and use public property for THEIR monuments, displays and the like and exclude others', not folks who lead by example) can always use a good trolling to keep them in line.

One thing I've always liked and respected about Micro is that he does nothing halfway. When he was a socialist, he was a full on "the .gov is going to tell you what to do for your own good and you'd better like it" socialist. When he went the other way he went all the way to "Laws prohibiting you from having sex with your dog in front of an elementary school are slavery!" Now he's examined religion and started sacrificing goats and praying to demons or whatever. Not really surprising. I do wonder if at some point he'll transition to ultra-Orthodox Judaism.
Note: I realize this post has a joking tone, but I really do mean it when I say that I respect his zeal for what he believes.
-
The problem (not specific to the OP) is zeal in general. I have previously referred to it as passionate self-righteousness --whether in politics, religion, or global warming ("science").
One thing I do know for sure, and I will defend this position with great zeal and fervor, is that I'm sometimes wrong.
<places small wooden chip on shoulder>
<juts out jaw menacingly>
<balls hands into fists>
You got a problem with that, buddy?

Submerged (via conveyor) to a depth of three feet. Any bubbles are cause for reject. Most leaks were caused by the spot weld in the hinges. Although once when I was there the seals were out of spec and caused every can to fail. That shut down the line for two days while we waited for new seals to arrive. All the old out of spec seals were later installed on reject cans and sold to the one guy that sells them to all the distributors in the US.

Honestly that was so many years ago I don't really remember the exact details. If I'm misremembering I apologize.

Huh? You're looking for bubbles coming from a can, sealed at atmospheric pressure, then immersed to 3 feet to add an additional pound or so of external pressure on it?
Don't add up. Seems to me water would leak in, not air out in that test. Was it hot water, so the air in the ammo box would expand?
-
I think it's because the air is buoyant. As it escapes, the water leaks in.
Whatever the exact cause, it does happen. That's also why sunken boats bubble for a bit. You can replicate it with an empty soda bottle and a loose lid. Or submerge an open canteen in a stream.

My fuel gauge had been acting funny, giving wildly false readings. There are two senders in that Subaru tank, and the outputs are averaged by some arcane Japanese method.
Got a goodly bump from a guy in a pickup truck behind me at a traffic light. No damage, just some marks on my rear bumper.
Fuel gauge worked fine after that.

One of the few identities I remember from geometry. Seen it elsewhere, too, been waiting for a while for any excuse, tangential or not, to use it.
