Title: Day Without an Immigrant
Post by: Ben on February 16, 2017, 09:06:03 AM
Today is "day without an immigrant day" again.

As a child of immigrants, I continue to be confused as to why this isn't actually called "day without a person who illegally entered the country from Mexico" day.

I wonder if the First lady is taking the day off today?

Oh, that's today?

Funny. I don't see the world falling apart around me.

The sun i shining through my windows as I type. I guess today didn't bring the Apocalypse after all.

My guess, though, is that if all illegal aliens stayed home for a day at least half the McDonald's restaurants in my county wouldn't be able to open for business.

I still got my breakfast taco.  It didn't affect that place.

Used to get a kick out of the El Fenix "authentic Mexican waiter" commercials.  I can get that at the Chinese place, the Italian place and the barbecue place.  Heck, I'm more likely to get a white waiter at two of the local Mexican restaurants than at the cafe.

I like how all these businesses are closing but then "complaining" about losing $X of revenue.

I think that if I went up to a business that was closed for this reason, I would probably never cast a shadow on their door again.

"As a child of immigrants, I continue to be confused as to why this isn't actually called "day without a person who illegally entered the country from Mexico" day."

Because the people who are promoting and supporting this can't, and do NOT, want to make a distinction.

They're doing everything they can to decriminalize illegal immigration and immigrants, which by extension tends to dampen recognition of illegal immigrants who commit additional crimes.

They had this crap some years ago during, I believe, Bush II's second term, I THINK in early May. I might even have been May 1.

Mtnbkr, his family, and I decided that we should celebrate it by eating at a Mexican restaurant.

It was tasty. We didn't have any problems, and the guy busing tables was very like an immigrant. I guess he decided that he needed the money/job more than to protest.

Last time when they had a "Day Without an (illegal) Mexican" . . . the manager at one local retailer said that shoplifting was down 30%.

A day without an immigrant? I liked Trump's version better.

Here in Key West, where English is a 2nd language, most of the furriners are either illegal immigrants or visitors from other lands.   As I am 'round and about today, I notice nothing has changed.   [popcorn]

Maybe May 5? Cinco de Mayo is an important day in Mexico.

It is more important to alcohol sellers in the US than it is in Mexico.

A Mexican guy (legal immigrant) I used to work with said all food is "Mexican" food.  Go to any resturant.  Look in the kitchen at who is cooking.  It is all "Mexican".   =D

I went to work and continued to work on a multi million dollar project that exports to Mexico.

Did a service call at a large commercial / high end veggie farm today,  didn't seem like anyone missed work over this.

The only thing I noticed was two idiots with illegible handwritten cardboard signs protesting something in the skinny median near a Lenoir-Rhyne Blvd intersection. Something about Mexico.

True. There are a number of Greek diners in my area of operations, and the kitchen staff in all of them are Latinos.

I remember the first time they did this several years ago.  It was horrible. No ladders, various flying car parts or unattached cement mixer trailers to dodge on the freeway.  It took 15 minutes off my commute each way.  Drivers were actually courteous in traffic.  That is saying a lot for Houston traffic.  I wish they wold do it every single day.

Best Mexican food places I have found are where the wait staff can ALMOST understand enough English to take yer order. It's best to just point at the menu.

If you know
Si - Yes
no - no (who knew!)
Agua - Water
Denada - You're Welcome
Gracias - Thanks/Thank You
bueno - good
Mas - more
cerveza - beer
por favor - please
then yer golden!

Nope. May 1, 2006.

The Great American Boycott (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_American_Boycott)

Planned for that day apparently because the Commies LOVED May day.

I also remember why I remembered it -- that's Mtnbkr's birthday, and we were out for dinner for him. He's a commie, obviously. :rofl:

I think the biggest failure is that it's not long enough or far reaching enough; they need to take at least a decade off, and also refuse to use any government services during that time to show us what it would really be like without illegals here.

I think for most who are here, if you are just using those English words, they will understand just fine.  Just don't expect to rattle off a paragraph and have them understand.

I've found that if you can manage please and thank you in the local language you are halfway there. Being able to order a beer and ask where the bathroom is and understand the answer is the other half.

Donde esta casa de pepe?

Donde esta casa de pepe?

No, señor. "Donde esta el baño."

And spelling in el español is highly phonetic. Unlike in English, pronunciation of vowels doesn't change from one word to the next.

A = "ah"
E = "eh"
I = "eee"
O = "oh"
U = "ooh"

Thus, your phrase should be "Donde esta la casa de pipi?" (And, yes, they do use the word "pipi" for peepee.)

Quote
Despite the shock of being fired, the employees say they aren’t mad and they expected a possible reprimand but they weren’t counting on getting canned.

“They feel like he could’ve done something for them since they’d been working for him," said the friend.

And maybe if they had bothered to call in he would have done something for them. Or maybe not. The article states that the owner had fired others in the past for not showing up without calling in, so I fail to see why it should be a surprise to these people. Why SHOULD he "do something for them," if they didn't even have the basic courtesy to call in and let him know that he wasn't going to have any staff for a day?

And, once again, there's no mention in the article about "illegal." Immigrants aren't the problem - ILLEGAL immigrants are the problem. Like the woman in California (?) who was arrested a couple of days ago. She's been in the U.S. illegally for decades, working under a fake social security number. Her "defense" is that she needed a fake social security number so she could work -- as if that somehow makes it okay. Never mind that the work she's been doing for all those years could have been done by someone who is here legally and has a legal right to be working.

Multiply that by a few million and pretty soon it starts to add up to some real money.
