I am trying to be calm and not judge the dog owners, but opening windows and throwing things at the cougar? If this was my house, there would have been at least one mag dump into the cougar trying to eat my dog.

Not everyone is able to own a firearm or wants to own/carry a firearm.

The dog had a job to do and did it without hesitation the best it could. Good dog. The owner, not so much. But it sounds like after the kids were safely in the house, the dog attacked the cougar, not the other way around. That wasn't necessary, but Dog didn't know that, I guess.

I wonder how many of these blue people have discovered that they can't own firearms.

Also, it would be darned hard to pick your target if the cougar and dog are fighting. Be practical about it. I've often thought a fixed-blade knife might be more effective in case of a personal attack by a lion.
Or even a canned boat horn.

Reminds me of all the tales about "brave teachers who died protecting children."
They weren't protecting anyone. And they may have been brave. But they were stupid and unarmed, and likely WANTED to be unarmed.
Dog couldn't have done anything about it, but people could have.

If they tried to stop entry to their room and died between the gunman and the kids they absolutely are heroes. Did a lot more than a fire team worth of cops with rifles.

Lots of weapons potentially available IF they put some thought into it (which they probably didn't). Gotta be willing to use them which might be a problem for some.

Just the thing for me to see, the week my daughter, SIL, and brood go to Denver to visit, and do some primitive camping.

Some people see virtue in being unarmed, even if the law hasn't disarmed them. These people are called victims, statistics, or Darwin award winners.

There was an article posted on another gun forum about a CA DNR officer/director (??) who lost his job because he went to Montana where it was legal to do so and bagged a nice sized lion.
All because it isn't legal to kill lion in CA. :facepalm: [barf]

First time I visited a good friend at their family "ranch" in Northern AZ, I was surprised to see the kids outside playing, and a couple of adults standing by watching with slung rifles. They educated me about lions stalking children. Gotta say, M1 Garand rifles are probably a decent choice for most predators in that part of the world. Both two and four leg varieties.

yeah, he was the chief or something, i was in SF at the time - everyone was angry as heck-they all believed they are endangered .
the guy tried to claim he ate the lion meat but no one bought the story , including me, ppl do not hunt cats for meat, do they?
lions are everywhere now in cali, not endangered at all
