Hello all, this site was recommended by a close friend so here goes my introduction post (flame away, if you so desire)
I am an engineer, working for a large defense contractor, where I run an advanced concepts group. I also consult for a variety of companies, primarily on the design of nuclear power plants. Politically, I am libertarian (well, I'd almost have to be, after sharing a fraternity and school with the party's founder). I enjoy good debate across the board on any issue, provided it is well researched---I'll be the first to admit it if proven wrong...but there had better be sources cited! :)
Interest wise, I race cars and motorcycles (and collect both), and enjoy a variety of shooting activties (everything from short range pistol work to LONG range with my 338LM), reloading, and reading.
Beliefs--I worked my way up, put myself through school working 3 jobs, and believe in personal responsibility, individual rights, and patriotism (in the purest sense. This is the greatest country on earth, because it was founded on those three things, so I feel sharing those beliefs puts me in pretty good company).
In any case, I hope I landed on the right board...otherwise, this might be the most flame-attracting post EVER!

Welcome! New guy buys beer and ammo for the rest. I'll have Sam Adams, and a few bricks of .22LR, thankyouverymuch =D.
-
I'm not a beer guy. I'll be happy with a case of 6.8 SPC, solely. "Tactical" loading, please, and those 85g Barnes TSX Bullets. [ar15]
-
You're at the right place. Welcome. =)
Based on your nuclear power plant experience, I'm rather curious what you think about the situation in Japan right now?
-
I just had to post this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_XX2lIT1tQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_XX2lIT1tQ)
-
Welcome, I second the Sam's and how about few boxes of 223.
-
The board trends Libertarian-Right, and obviously likes guns, although since this is a spin off for non-gun discussions from another gun-board, there's not a ton of gun discussion here.
The main thing is to figure out the weird humor here. And the board's everlasting love of the movie Zardoz.
Hmmm, Screen name: Birdman. Occupation: Defense Contractor.
No chance you're affiliated with these guys? http://www.myconfinedspace.com/2007/05/25/birdman-weapons-systems-homeboy-nyte-sytes/
-
I'll take some .45 ACP and heiniken.
and you certainly are welcome here...
Although I question your sainity for wanting to join us =D
And FIREFLY!!! (bad aj for forgetting firefly!)
-
Welcome to the dark side, young Jedi...
Brad
-
A bottle of Red Stag and in lieu of ammo a box of 45ACP bullets from Nosler, 185 HP's.
Welcome and remember it's all fistful's fault. Once you learn that it all falls into place. ;)
-
I brought Birdman here, but I cannot be responsible for anything he does or says :-) [popcorn] [popcorn]
Welcome, buddy!
-
Ignore the beer and bullets hazing. All new members submit to paddling and binge drinking.
Welcome aboard.
-
Wow, good stuff.
And FIREFLY!!! (bad aj for forgetting firefly!)
Yes, I like firefly as well (who doesn't?).
I'm not a beer guy. I'll be happy with a case of 6.8 SPC, solely. "Tactical" loading, please, and those 85g Barnes TSX Bullets.
beer and ammo...damn, thats what my paycheck turns into, how did you know!? (though, the most exotic request was sam and 6.8SPC...phew, I thought it was gonna be some of my 338LM and some weird belgian beer!)
Hmmm, Screen name: Birdman. Occupation: Defense Contractor.

No, not the same birdman...but that is damn funny (though, probably limited in sales if it was real since anyone who holds a weapon that way probably doesn't know how to align sights on the target)
Based on your nuclear power plant experience, I'm rather curious what you think about the situation in Japan right now?
How did I know japan would come up...well, since I am actually rather tired of talking about this (its hard enough to spend all day working on related stuff. I can summarize quickly...
1. that kind of thing can't happen here
2. new plants, it REALLY can't happen here
3. plants I work on developing, (genIV)( are prevented by the laws of physics from having any core damage from occuring
4. the MSM sucks...and can't report anything accurately
5. its amazing how many people can't (undersand the metric system (micro/mili), understand that radiation is all around us, and are the modern day equivalent of a caveman being afraid of the night taking away the sun, because he doesn't understand how it works...I wish people would just TRY to learn (even wikipedia is pretty much accurate on how nuke stuff works!)...
6. We in teh industry see japan in almost a glass half full fashion...what occured was the ABSOLUTE WORST CASE (for a real plant, not some POS russian one that didn't even have a containment building), and the overall impact was really small (in terms of long term damage and loss of life)...so I think people should concentrate more on teh OTHER effects of the disaster (how come no media is reporting on the massive petroleum spills at refineries, the associated loss of life, gas main breaks and deaths, etc...
7. Even if you INCLUDE chernoybl and japan, on a loss of life per TWhr basis, nuclear is the safest of ANY power production method (and thats even not fair, I'm including worst case accidents for nuclear, but not long term loss of life from pollution and production for fossil fuels).
Anyway, can we drop that topic for now? please :)
-
Anyway, can we drop that topic for now? please :)
Of course; thanks for obliging. =)
-
I'm responsible for that. I picked his brain for the better part of two days about it.
-
Let's see: a self-made libertarian engineer who likes fast guns, cars and motorcycles, and believes in personal responsibility.
I think you have the wrong forum. :D
Welcome, birdman.
-
Greetings and salutations.
I will take a box of 9mm and .223, also some Leinenkugel. =)
ETA: Toss in a bottle of Lindemans Kriek.

1 - You have not identified the alien overlord(s) you have sworn fealty to. Minus 2 points.
2 - You are not an attorney. Plus 3 points.
3 - You are willing to provide beer and ammo. Plus 1 point. (A nice bock, and .45AR, if you please.)
4 - You said "it could never happen." Minus 5 points.
5 - You both race and collect gas-guzzling destroyers of Mother Gia. Plus 2 points.
6 - You think you landed on the right board. Minus 1 point for brash optimism and minus 1 point for foolhardiness.
7 - You withheld the identity of the person who led you to this den of iniquity. Plus 2 points.
8 - You did not indicate if you duct-tape ceramic plates to your back when firing 388LM. Plus 2 points.
9 - Two posts on the same thread and you have not veered off topic. Minus 1 point.
10 - You have not run screaming from the board with imprecations of revenge. No points.
OK. You seem to be about right for this group of happy wanderers.
Now - for the finial initiation ritual. Do you apply sauce to yout BBQ before, during, or only after cooking?
stay safe.

VA,
I think with the statement of 338LM, you would have to assume that he is duct-taping ceramic plates to his back. He should have stated that he wasn't, so Minus 2 points.
-

I believe an "all three" option needs to be available- Before, during, after and a little more while I'm eating it.
-
Also, you failed to mention your views on the following:
1: Detcord
2: Bacon
3: Fistful
4: Zardoz
-
Also, you failed to mention your views on the following:
1: Detcord
2: Bacon
3: Fistful
4: Zardoz
Hey, he's new. He's doesn't know about Fistful.
We all know whose fault that is.
-
Well, lets see here:
1 - You have not identified the alien overlord(s) you have sworn fealty to. Minus 2 points. +2, I AM the alien overlord (I only came here because we are at war with Pelosi's planet...I mean seriously, I'm waiting for her to peel the mask off like the original V aliens)
2 - You are not an attorney. Plus 3 points. YAY!
4 - You said "it could never happen." Minus 5 points. damn...should have clarified
5 - You both race and collect gas-guzzling destroyers of Mother Gia. Plus 2 points. I also drive a 6.2L ford raptor to work...bonus points?
Now - for the finial initiation ritual. Do you apply sauce to yout BBQ before, during, or only after cooking? depends on the meat, but usually all three (and fitz has my grill)
Also, you failed to mention your views on the following:
1: Detcord: I wish I had some...I have...stuff...that needs "modification", and by stuff, I mean anything I can find, and by modification, I mean, blow the crap out of...though, I prefer more exotic materials ;)
2: Bacon: awesome, and a key ingredient in fitz and my "ham and mozz. stuffed, bacon wrapped, syrup glazed pork chops"--yeah, we call it "the homer"
3: Fistful ...of dollars? confused.
4: Zardoz connery rules, though not my favorite cult classic
-
Well, lets see here:
Fistful is the one to blame. For everything. Including the fact that you don't know about him it.
-
4: Zardoz connery rules, though not my favorite cult classic
What is your favorite cult classic?
-
What is your favorite cult classic?
No favorite per se, but a nice list (off the top of my head, and in all categories, and not classics...I need to dig up my dvd library to remember all of those)
Donnie Darko (before it got popular)
Equillibrium (how was this NOT popular?!)
Boondock Saints (10 years in boston, got to love it)
War Inc.
Grosse Pointe Blank...does that count as cult classic?
Screamers (back to scifi...who doesn't like homicidal self-replicating robots?...can that be a genre onto itself?)
I'm sure there are many more I have and am forgetting, but this was just a quick scan through my open movie directory
-
The rest of the cretins on this board will settle for any cheap stuff. one bottle of the following: Pyrat, Red Breast, and Glenlivet.
-
I'd love to hear what Gen IV designs you're working on. And I suspect a few others would too (Not today though, unless you consider that different than talking about work/Japan etc..) Pretty much everyone here agrees with you about deaths per energy-unit. Coal putting out more radiation through it's smokestacks than all commercial power accidents combined etc.
VHTR? Pebble bed? SCWR? LFR? MSR? GFR?
Etc.
Again, not now, not today, just "sometime".
Cause, if we can get over the NIMBY's and politics of it all, damn if we won't need them, badly.

Funny you mention pebble bed...I've worked on all types, but I concentrate mainly on the VHTR and PB...check your PM's ;)

Hello all, this site was recommended by a close friend so here goes my introduction post (flame away, if you so desire)
<12 step meeting>Hello Birdman</12 step meeting>
Politically, I am libertarian
"Nuanced" out the wazoo, with libertarian/ancap sympathies. Explaining my politics would take a while, and involve an exposition of Vos' two age model (http://www.amazon.com/Pauline-Eschatology-Geerhardus-Vos/dp/0875525059). So, never mind.
and enjoy a variety of shooting activties (everything from short range pistol work to LONG range with my 338LM), reloading, and reading.
Mostly handgun. Mostly 9mm, anymore, 'cause it's cheaper.
-
fistful changed his name in hopes that nobody could track him down.
He is now "the artist formerly known as fistful."
Akin to "the bank robber formerly known as Dillinger."
Go figure. But if you have any goats to be scaped, he's the one to scape them onto.
Welcome Aboard!

And this...masterful.
A hearty "Welcome"!

It was a joke...I mean, what if I mistyped the url and ended up posting THAT "hello world" post on www.redistributivetaxesandnogunsforanyone.com? I bet I would be flamed like no tomorrow! (well, before the "new civility" started of course ;) )

NOW, The Real Question. Are you now, or have you ever been, a witch a member of the Communist Party in doubt as to the circumstances of Obama's birth?

No. He was born on our planet, but in true douglas adams' style, he was a passenger on the "B" ark we sent to colonize this planet (points if anyone gets the reference). Now, the fact he won't release his college transcripts does bother me. I mean, I needed to show mine when I first got a job out of school, it seems, well, you know, relevant to ones intellectual capability.
-

This is incorrect. He was born in a stable, wrapped in swaddling bands, and laid in a manger. Amen.

I'm curious as to why someone who's handle is shorthand for 230 grain Round Nose (AKA Hardball .45 ACP slug) is asking for 135gr .38 Special ammo ?

Oh...and the multitude of Brady Bunch avatars?
I'll refer you to... uhh...someone not me.
=D

Welcome to APS. It's an interesting group. You'll find plenty of other libertarians, engineers, nuke types, and weird combination herein. You'll undoubtedly get pestered about nuke type stuff or whatnot, but that's par for the course. There's a wide variety of folks here, and feel free to pester them as well.
I'm a former defense contractor guy myself, mostly aerospace and communications. Tho, I'm debating accepting an IT gig at the place that insures those reactors you're consulting on. Probably going turn it down, commute would be too long

Reference? I've never heard about "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy". So how am I supposed to get the reference to the Golgafrinchan "B Ark" full of hairdressers and phone sanitizers? And hence get any points?

It's a trick. Get an Axe!
Throw him in the pit!
Oh, add to the cult classics: evil dead, evil dead II, and army of darkness
But, best horror movie line ever (points if you name the movie)
"that nice man needed our help, and we set him on fire!

Winner! And even the attempt to lead you astray with an exclamation point failed. Point to you sir, point indeed.

Welcome aboard.
I'll take a bottle of Mist and some batlepacks of 7.62x51.
I'm in the weird combination group.
jim
-
Welcome to the party, pal. I'll have a keg of Verner's and a couple boxes of 7.62 Tok.
-
Welcome to our little corner of the intertubes.... You'll find we're Mostly Harmless.... Except, as mentioned before, fistful. It's all his fault, and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
It's a nice place to kick back, sip an adult beverage of your choice, and ponder navel lint. Or the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. Even Vogon poetry... Well. No. That last bit will get you shot. Never mind that...
Sorry, I've been sipping an adult beverage of my choice, and therefore the internal censors are a little skewed. How dare I mention Vogon poetry.
Klaatu... Veratu.... *coughing fit*
There. That oughta do it...
And now, I'm gonna go ponder universal navel lint.
P.S. Red Stag, and .30-06, if you will, please.... 168gr AP, given my druthers. :P
P.P.S. I'd ponder Vogon navel lint, but that's just disgusting.
P.P.P.S. If you will, fire at will.... Even though poor Will really has done nothing to deserve it.... (I warned you that I'd been sipping an adult beverage of my choice...)

And rednecks (raises hand). Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go tweaker hunting...
Oh, and I'm going to need some 5.56 and some 'shine (better be good stuff). And plenty of both.
-
Cuervo! Moar Cuervo!
Sad story, I am without functional firearms at the moment. I'll just have some extra Cuervo, thanks!
And remember, if you don't see the fistful, it can't eat you. Or the goat you rode in on.
-
Mmmmm, goat.
-
I'm curious as to why someone who's handle is shorthand for 230 grain Round Nose (AKA Hardball .45 ACP slug) is asking for 135gr .38 Special ammo ?
Eclectic tastes. If it hurls anything out of anything, I use it. Slingshots included. Low on that particular .38 loading for Smith Airweight. Avoiding dark alleys, bus stations at night, etc. to prevent having to use it all up.
Usually carry 1911 only in winter or in summer under a Hawaiian shirt. And each March 29th to honor Saint John d'Utah during the Feast of the U.S. Pistol, cal .45 ACP, Model of 1911, now known as Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911
birdman, don't forget to apologize to The artist formerly known as fistful's mule. I don't remember his mule's name, sorry. You don't have to apologize to his goat, as far as I know.

Say WHAT??
I always assumed "230RN" meant that he was a 230 pound male nurse!
DD
Oh, and I'd be happy right now with some Sam's Club diet soda and a tin of 7.62x54r.
-
Welcome!
I'll settle box of WWB .45 auto. k thanx
-
Grosse Pointe Blank...does that count as cult classic?
Yes. Yes it does.
-
Well....it's been a day....have y'all chased off the newbie yet?.....
Oh....Hai Birdman!.....welcome to the crew.....do you know anything about adapting a nuclear reactor to power an oversized bass boat?....it's for a anti-pirate project we're cooking up.....
I'll take a case of S&B 158gr FMJFP .38SPL ammo and a case of Woodchuck Amber Cider, plz.....
-
What a crew...
2 points for not getting running the hellack out of here, yet. [popcorn]
I'll take a Budweiser just to piss all the beer snobs off and some .308 if you don't mind. At the current prices about 3 rounds should just about cover it.
Now, back to Japan, but only because you asked us not to, that's how it works around here. ;)
Current thought on the board is they have had the following: earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown with highly radiated water flowing unimpeded into the sea. In your highly educated nuclear opinion wouldn't Godzilla rising from the ocean be the next logical direction for this scenario to take? Others think it's Mothra but I tend to disagree. Your thoughts? [tinfoil]
-
Or is that "nuclearly educated opinion"? I'm not sure. =)
-
they have had the following: earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown with highly radiated water flowing unimpeded into the sea
You forgot the two (or is it three now) new earthquakes.
With that many shifts of the magnetic poles and the Earf's axis we should have both Godzilla and Mothra by now, as well as a strong posibility that Speed Racer has crashed freaking Chim-Chim has been driving Mach 5 for the last few days.
Since these things have not occurred, it must be the result of something that has to do with the nuke-you-lar plants. So, Mr. Smarty-pants NewGuy, tell us what perzackly it is.
stay safe.
-
If you don't know who fistful is, 'flush out your head gear, new guy'.* It is a prerequisite for joining this board to learn about 'teh fistful'.
If Mothra and Gojira haven't shown up at Fukushima yet, it is both disappointing and must be fistful's fault somehow. Gojira could put an end to the radiation release very quickly, and save Japan in the process.
I'll take a few rounds of 30-06 152 grain, please, to feed my Garand, with some Black Butte Porter to enjoy afterwards.
And welcome aboard.
* an easy one.
-
Gojira...
-
Cabin Fever (2002)
Diet Dr. Pepper and 9mm WinMag please!
Welcome aboard!
-
I'm expecting Gamera before I'd expect Mothra....flying turtles rule.....
-
Welcome, Birdman! Aspiring engineer type here. Dalwhinnie please, and I'm fresh out of both 6.5 Swede and .303 Brit. Either will do, thanks.
A goat once bit my sister...
-
Flush out your headgear...FMJ of course.
Okay, now for some weird movie trivia as a diversion
Name the movie where each thing is mentioned:
Krell metal
WOPR (extra points for what it stands for without googling it)
First movie with a Barrett 50?
Name the actor:
Got into fights with man playing a machine, and in another movie, fought machines as a man
Name the actor who has had all of the following roles: FBI guy, CIA guy, Army NCO, drug dealer, private detective and cop. Extra points if you can name the most famous historical person the actor also portrayed.
-
Yo, 'sup??
Time Bandits
Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale
.44M Planetwrecker Loudenboomers, please. I'm nearly out.
Oh, and pleasedtameetcha

War Games
Robocop
I'll leave the actors for someone else.

Grosse Pointe Blank...does that count as cult classic?
Yes, I've always enjoyed that film....Time to go check it out from the library again.

Birdman, my iphone and Macbook are annoying me with their ridiculously proprietary power cables. Will you plz tell me how to replace the batteries with nucular reactors? 'kthnxbai.

Birdman, my iphone and Macbook are annoying me with their ridiculously proprietary power cables. Will you plz tell me how to replace the batteries with nucular reactors? 'kthnxbai.
It's quite simple....but first tell me, do you want to have children in the future? If you do, it's a little more complex.
Kidding though. Mini reactors, very difficult (minimum size is driven by mean free path of a neutron, and minimum shielding is driven by mean free path of a gamma ray). Mini nuclear batteries...much easier. If you google miniature RTG, "nuclear battery" or the like, you will find several examples, some of which I've done some work with.
-
In that case how far away are we from the self contained mini reactor for the home? I happen to be slightly familiar with Nukey-Poo but even that one would be too big for home use. We'd need something that fits under the kitchen cabinets like a dishwasher. I'm almost kidding but not quite. =)

I'd be happy with the Nuke-In-A-Box that was mentioned here a year or two ago. It was a nuke plant in a 10 foot cube-size concrete container that could be easily placed in remote locations to provide power to about 100 homes.

Yeah, that specific one is not only extremely expensive (on a per home basis), but has some material issues I've never seen resolved. Mine are bigger (5-50k homes), but cheaper, and not that much bigger (think large barn)

In a former life I was an air traffic controller for the Marine Corps. When we deployed (don't mis-read that, I only deployed to Laguna AAF in Arizona, and to 29 palms) an ATC detachment, we used anywhere from 6-12 large diesel generators. And those were just for ATC. AARFF, and any squadrons on the airfield used them as well.
What I envision, is one of these nukes-in-a-box being used for deployed military units. We would have been able to deploy with a whole less section, and all the personnel, equipment, etc that comes along with that.
I'd venture to guess you could run a whole mobile airfield with one.

Quite easily, except for the fact they weigh about 300 tons, more if you want to make sure your average ATGM can't blow it open. But trust me the idea is being worked, more so for fixed, non-deployed bases on us territory. The vulnerabilities are too much for deployed units--I can ensure it would take some serious ordnance to take out a system, but it's gonna be heavy, and only moved twice, once to install, once when it's done 30yrs later. Sorry. Also, the power needs for deployed airfields are huge...your average large trailer or skid diesel genset is 500-1000 kW...most airfields need several, the reactor in a box is only a few 1000kW. Also, once you turn them on, you don't want to move them till end of life--moving that much spent radioactive fuel is a very sensitive issue.

That makes me sad.

If the Rooskies could produce land-mobile nuke plants in the 1950s & 1960s, we oughta be able to produce nuke plants that move on Segways today
Okay, motorcycles with sidecars as risk-mitigation.

Oh, and I was at the Trinity site last week for the semi-annual open house.
