Canada is losing the tug of war with Siberia for magnetic north.
It has been observed that the pole moves and has moved over time.
According to this article it is moving faster than ever observed before.

Global warming melted the ice so now the north pole is being pushed by the sea currents towards Russia!
OR
Russia is stealing the north pole so they can control the world!

I guarantee every Hollywood idiot and social media moron will be running with "Climate change!" Which, ironically is correct, except that the shifting can cause climate change versus the shifting being caused by those filthy humans and their AGW.
We're running at what? Twice as long as average for a polar shift? At some point it's bound to happen, though I believe it's an event that takes at least hundreds of years.

And that is why I have started my new map-making and navigation company, SouthUp! I plan to take it public later, but if you want in on the early action, I can get you a good price on share options. I'll even throw in a new map and compass.
-
Cool! I won't need the compass though. I just bought a new firestarter on Amazon that has a built in compass, and the North arrow already points South, so I'm all set!

You haven't thought this through. When the poles DO change, your south-pointing arrow will point north, totally ruining your too clever by half plan. [tinfoil] [popcorn] [popcorn] >:D >:D >:D

Looks like the shift may be slowing down, though.
So what do we call it as it passes through the equator?

Wait, wait ...
The Earth's climate could also change. A recent Danish study has found that the earth's weather has been significantly affected by the planet's magnetic field.
I thought all changes in the Earth's weather were caused by us climate deniers and our "carbon footprint." Does this mean we're not guilty?
Back in the 1970s or 1980s there were two competing books on the then-trendy doomsday topic of an impending pole shift. I met the author of one of them at a conference a few years after the books came out. The author I met was John White. He was a former U.S. Navy officer. Interestingly, once sales of his book tapered off, he recanted and decided that pole shift wasn't going to happen after all.

"Chico"?

Except of course it will happen again at some point. Just not in the way or the "overnight" speed that the TEOTWAWKI group fantasizes about.
The way the pole shifters think it will happen:

I thought I've read somewhere that Erf's poles had changed positions a couple times in the past.
And yes, three things control Erf's climate/weather.
1. The Erf's magnetic field and strength.
2. Axial tilt.
3. The giant glowing ball of plasma and gas in space.

Moreso Milankovitch cycles altogether: Eccentricity, obliquity, precession.

Yes.
The magnetic field's reversals have been shown by the reversals of direction of magnetization of frozen lava slowly oozing out of the mid-atlantic rift:
Details:
https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Plate-Tectonics/Chap3-Plate-Margins/Divergent/Mid-Atlantic-Ridge
Evidence for this process comes from the magnetic properties of the erupted basalt. The Earth’s magnetic field has been shown to “flip” occasionally so that the North and South magnetic poles reverse with time. Basalt contains minute magnetic minerals that take on the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field at the time of eruption.
These polarity reversals are therefore recorded in the rocks forming at the Mid Atlantic Ridge every time the Earth’s magnetism changes from a normal field (as it is today) to a reversed field (as it was about 0.78 million years ago). When these variations in the magnetic rocks are mapped on the ocean bed they are seen to line up in a series of alternating “magnetic stripes”, rather like barcodes.
The significance of the magnetic stripes was only revealed when their ages were discovered from dating magnetic reversals in volcanic rocks accessible on land. The dates revealed that the Atlantic Ocean was opening by seafloor spreading from the Mid Atlantic Ridge at a rate of about 0.02 metres per year.
The most casual glance at a map will show how the outlines of Europe and Africa "mesh" with the outlines of North and South America, showing this spreading.

I knew the pole was moving. I remember in map-reading classes in the late 80's being told that the north pole moved a meter or two a year. But 50km's or more is mind blowing. I don't think the Top Gear guys could get there now....
-
^ But I thought you were asking / talking about the reversals:
"I thought I've read somewhere that Erf's Earth's poles had changed positions a couple times in the past."
So that's what I answered.
" I don't think the Top Gear guys could get there now.... "
Nor Sheldon Cooper's expedition to prove magnetic monopoles. :)

Bluenose shellback.

Bluenose shellback.
I just knowed one of our Nauticians would chime in with that.
What took you so long?

REFs:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line-crossing_ceremony
The U.S. Navy has well-established line-crossing rituals. Sailors who have already crossed the Equator are nicknamed Shellbacks, Trusty Shellbacks, Honorable Shellbacks, or Sons of Neptune. Those who have not crossed are nicknamed Pollywogs, or Slimy Pollywogs.

I'll leave it for the Simple Student of Naval Nonsense (SSNN) to look up "Bluenose" for himself. Herself. Itself.

Too late. Got one of those 24 years ago from the Wizard of Christchurch.

So what are the predictions on what would happen if the poles start to shift? Last I read about it, the shift was pretty slow by our reckoning and I was thinking we may end up with a period where the poles might be pretty weak.
-
Mainly shielding from the solar wind, is what I heard. I guess when or if the N pole settles in the south, we'd be back to normal in that respect.
This sounds a little fear-mongery, but:
https://www.express.co.uk/news/science/617587/Defenceless-Earth-200-YEARS-solar-radiation-blasts-magnetic-poles-shift
On the other hand, it may be like the Y2K hand-wringing and the major effect might just be on Boy Scout Orienteering.
(I, personally, would also expect a change in volcanism and seismology because of all that liquid down there sloshing around unpredictably. But I haven't heard anything about that, I just thought of it the other day and haven't checked it out.)
