If a block of Tillamook extra sharp cheddar starts to get moldy after two weeks in my fridge, I wonder what is the life expectancy of the cheese in Missouri?

It's almost comical. On the one hand, cow farts are destroying the planet. On the other hand, a lot of the left is now pushing to turn tilled land into no-till cow pastures, because no-till grazing sequesters carbon and reduces fertilizer use (the cattle provide their own). I mean, the latter is actually a somewhat sane approach as it does end up being good for the land and still keeps a meat industry going, versus the "cows are evil" vegan approach. Full disclosure, I do no-till grazing.

It was good stuff. (We got a 5# brick of it I think during Reagan) Like deluxe American cheese, but a little dryer and sharper.

It's government cheese. The life expectancy is measured in thousands of years.
Speaking of Tillamook cheese, I can get Tillamook dairy products way over here in Hickory, NC. I grab some extra sharp Cheddar slices for sandwiches now and again at the local Food Lion.

funny, I was wondering just last week what happened with all that goobermink cheese from a couple of years ago.
What brought it up was finding some mold on a block of cheddar which overstayed its welcome in my fridge.
Without delving into it back when it was all in the news, I kinda half figured they maybe irradiated it for preservation.

It's only comical if you make the unwarranted assum[ption that those folks are rational, logical beings.

We got a big delivery of 5 pound blocks of it last year. I was working on something in there after pickup day and they gave me one. It was just like Velveeta.

It has really gone downhill then. It used to be processed like Velveeta, but with a lot more cheese and a lot less water and salt. Old English loaf, if you remember that, was pretty close.

I remember people lining up for gov cheese during the worst of the 1970s economy.
Distributions didn't start until Reagan kicked it loose in the 1981, but we were still deep in the 70s recession economy.

The Scout camp where I worked in 1983 had racks of that stuff that we used liberally in the mess hall.

When I worked on the rez in Montana a few of my coworkers would give me their cheese. They always had an excess of it at home. They would also give me all of the burbot they caught, the looks of it made it so they didn't want to eat it. Their loss. :)

We used to get government cheese from my grandparents back in the '70s. I'm not sure how they were getting it, might have been because they were drawing social security.
Either way I remember it as being fairly decent cheese, very similar to standard American Cheese.

If you are refering to Kraft Singles cheese product, you are right. Real American Cheese is different and better and it is real cheese, by definition.

American Cheese is made to melt better/faster. FWIW, and Fistful will recognize the name - I do a Christmas Santa photo with the brothers from the Hautly Cheese family every year.
My favorite is a tossup between 2021 and 2018, with a slight edge for 2021. Yeah, we heard banjos...

The "rule" for the photo is that all the stuff has to pretty much come from attic or garage or just get grabbed. Painting is allowed.
