12k+ comments. "BBC, you suck!" is leading by about 50:1.

In the few hours since I posted this the comment count has more than doubled. This thing is heating up fast, and not positively for the BBC. I don't see anyone coming away unscathed.

I find it funny that "assaulting a tree with a pick up truck" is routinely included in his list of offenses. The powers that be at BBC may or may not realize that they're about to take a monsterous financial hit, many of them actually think like this:

I nominate the name "WFO" for the new show.  I'll watch it if it has those three guys on it.

Starting to look like it might better be called  "DNF".

After Top Gear went off the air the first time, Midlands TV (IIRC) started a show called Fifth Gear of basically the same format.  In fact, I think a clip from the show was posted here not that long ago.  (About a car crashing at 120mph, again, IIRC.)

Anyway, what made the show we're the three personalities.   And in doing so the BBC had captured lightening in a bottle.   Yet, the problem is that you have lightening in said bottle.  You can't keep it in there forever, and when a key part of your show is having a brash, offensive personality as part of that lightening, well, at some point it will get loose.

Although, I did chuckle at the "slope" double entrendre story.  Seriously?!?!?  7+ million viewers and they got TWO complaints.

Clarkson really should do one of those "you're not yourself when you're hungry" Snickers commercials.

Speaking as a man with a deep seated hatred of the BBC, I can only hope and pray that they reboot Top Gear exactly as Zoe Williams describes.

UK news sources beginning to speculate that the incident was more of an excuse than a reason. Seems the BBC upper echelons are considered increasingly liberal.

No speculation about it. It's common knowledge that the people who run BBC hated Clarkson. The only reason they didn't get rid of him years ago is because he was a cash cow of monumental proportions, and if there's one think that they love more than PC liberalism, it's cash.

There's been a lot of talk about the 50 million pounds that Top Gear generates, but as far as I can tell, that's only money brought in directly by the show. No one is speculating about the enormous hit in advertising and ancillary revenue that this is going to have on BBC's coffers. That's probably in the hundreds of millions of pounds a year.

I have no doubt that BBC is going to try to keep Top Gear on the air with a new presenter (or presenters, because there's still no word from Hammond or May on what they're intentions are), and I have absolutely no doubt that it's going to fail miserably.

I second Balog's suggestion of "Top Gear with Zoe Williams" just for the gargantuan train wreck that it would be.  If the Beeb's executives want a left-leaning, politically correct car show, give them one good and hard.

Re May and Hammond: they are, understandably, keeping quiet about their intentions, but May did remark that the three of them come as a package, so infer what you will.

I'm guessing a lot of what happens next will depend  heavily on whether or not they can sweet-talk Hammond and May into staying on the show. Might even be that the two have threatened a wholesale exodus if Jezza stays gone. The BBC may be helmed by liberal leftistsn but in the end it will still be money that speaks loudest.

TG has a worldwide viewership of 350 million. (For the data challenged, that's the approximate population of the United States.) They got there on the unique combination of facts, personalities, and entertainment value. Take away any of those three and the show crashes and burns.

If he doesn't make a triumphant return to TG there will be a line of industry heavyweights beating on his door, contracts in hand. This won't hurt him in the least.
