The article suggests that passengers are being allowed to disembark, and that another batch of passengers will be taken on board. That doesn't sound like a quarantine to me.

Yeah, didn't catch the fact that the headline was a bit misleading. The entire ship isn't quarantined but 12 Chinese passengers who are showing symptoms of the virus are.

I wonder how effective some of these "quarantines" actually are - don't you have to keep those in quarantine separated not just from the general population, but from one another as well?

Might be hard to do on a cruise ship.

I have no intention of taking a cruise on one of those things ... ever. I might walk on-board to see someone else off on their cruise, but you're right -- not if the ship had been "quarantined" for coronavirus in recent history.

I've been on cruise ships before and been ok. 
I would NOT go on a ship that had held Corona virus patients.

But there have been a number of episodes where cruise ships have had outbreaks of disease/food poisonings in recent years  and have had to deal with costly results.   I'm not really sure I'd get on a ship again ....

Carnival cruise ships typically run 3,500 to 4,500 passengers, and over 1,000 crew. Princess and Royal Caribbean are similar. Norwegian may carry up to 5,000+ passengers!

Sissies. I regularly got on a 5,000 passenger ship with people who had just gone on leave all over the country. We were all sick for a month every time and we survived. In fact I think that's why old codgers like George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole were nearly immortal, they survived naval immunotherapy early in life.
