windows server 2003 help
« on: December 23, 2007, 07:04:06 PM »
I have a box running windows 2003 server. How do i get the computer off a domain? I want to set up as a work group machine.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Right click on "My Computer", select Properties, then Computer Name, Change, then click Workgroup to get it off of Domain.

Or something like that. It's early and I'm not quite awake.

When I'm at the window to change the computer name, the options for domain and work group are grayed out. Ie... can't change them.

Is it a domain controller???

If so, run DCPROMO from the start/run box, and demote the damned thing.

All of this assumes you have administrative rights, btw.

I'll give that a try when I get home. Yes I do have admin rights to the computer.
Does keeping this thing a domain controller have any advantage?

You're trying to do this to the domain controller?

That's done in a different place.  Let's see....

Start, run, administrative tools, "administer your server".

At the top of the window -- add or remove a role.  click through, follow the bouncing ball and remove the domain controller role.
