Title: Pipes...
Post by: Bogie on August 16, 2022, 08:45:43 PM
Seems like most of the "tobacco" pipes on Amazon have screens included with them.

Sigh...

I bet I can still keep a pipe lit until it is no longer worth smoking on three wooden matches.

The major reason I quit smoking pipes was all the little holes in my clothes from the pipe dottle.  Not to mention the potentially high fire danger from the aforesaid dottle.  Not only in the house, but in the wild.

Added:  My use of the term "dottle" differs from the formal use on dictionaries.  To me, dottle is the dozens of still-hot sparks that escape from the pipe while smoking it, especially in the wind.

Need to tamp it a bit... I used to use a roofing nail.

I use a 16p nail for tamping & scraping.  Cut off the pointy end to ~3", flatten that end on an anvil, round it a bit, then sand to a decent shape.  Make them a few at a time, but they last forever - or until I lose it.

I use a Bic lighter 'cause it's much more convenient than carrying a bunch of matches.

As far as the dottle problem, I've never experienced it, even in a wind.

The Kentucky State Fair had a pipe smoking contest - You got three matches, had to keep it lit, and not burned out, the longest.

She's got a competition clutch with the four on the floor
And she purrs like a kitten 'till the lake pipes roar
And if that ain't enough to make you flip your lid
There's one more thing, I got the pink slip, daddy.

I just ordered up a beer and sat down at the bar
When some guy walked in an' said who owns this car
With the peace sign the mag wheels and four on the floor
Well he looked at me and I damn near died
And I decided that I'd jus wait outside
So I layed a dollar on the bar and headed for the door
Jes' when I thought I'd get outta there with my skin
These five big dude come strollin' in
With this one old drunk chick and some fella with green teeth
An' I was almost to the door when the biggest one
Said you tip your hat to this lady son
An' when I did all that hair fell out from underneath

My pappy said, "Son, you're gonna' drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln."

Have you heard this story of the Hot Rod race
When Fords and Lincolns was settin' the pace
That story is true, I'm here to say
I was drivin' that Model A

It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up
That Model A body makes it look like a pup
It's got eight cylinders; uses them all
It's got overdrive, just won't stall
With a 4-barrel carb and a dual exhaust
With 4.11 gears you can really get lost
It's got safety tubes, but I ain't scared
The brakes are good, tires fair

Pulled out of San Pedro late one night
The moon and the stars was shinin' bright
We was drivin' up Grapevine Hill
Passing cars like they was standing still

All of a sudden in a wink of an eye
A Cadillac sedan passed us by
I said, "Boys, that's a mark for me!"
By then the taillight was all you could see

Now the fellas was ribbin' me for bein' behind
So I thought I'd make the Lincoln unwind
Took my foot off the gas and man alive
I shoved it on down into overdrive

Wound it up to a hundred-and-ten
My speedometer said that I hit top end
My foot was glued like lead to the floor
That's all there is and there ain't no more

Now the boys all thought I'd lost my sense
And telephone poles looked like a picket fence
They said, "Slow down! I see spots!
The lines on the road just look like dots."
Took a corner; sideswiped a truck
Crossed my fingers just for luck
My fenders was clickin' the guardrail posts
The guy beside me was white as a ghost

Smoke was comin' from out of the back
When I started to gain on that Cadillac
Knew I could catch him, I thought I could pass
Don't you know by then we'd be low on gas?

We had flames comin' from out of the side
Feel the tension. Man! What a ride!
I said, "Look out, boys, I've got a license to fly!"
And that Caddy pulled over and let us by

Now all of a sudden she started to knockin'
And down in the dips she started to rockin'
I looked in my mirror; a red light was blinkin'
The cops was after my Hot Rod Lincoln!

They arrested me and they put me in jail
And called my pappy to throw my bail
And he said, "Son, you're gonna' drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop drivin' that Hot... Rod... Lincoln!"

Preceded by: Hot Rod Race

Now me and my wife and my brother Joe,
took off in my Ford from San Pedro.
We hadn't much gas 'n' the tires was low,
but the doggone Ford could barely go.
Now along about the middle of the night,
we were rippin' along like white folks might,
when a Mercury behind he blinked his lights,
and he honked his horn and he flew outside.

We had twin pipes and a Columbia b***,
you people may think that I'm in a rut,
but to you folks who don't dig the jive,
that's two carburetors and an overdrive.

We made grease spots outta many good town,
and left the cops heads spinnin' round 'n' round.
They wouldn't chase, they'd run and hide,
but me and that Mercury stayed side by side.
Now we were Ford men and we likely knew,
that we would race until somethin' blew,
and we thought it over,
now, wouldn't you?

I looked down at my lovely bride,
her face was blue, I thought she'd died.
We left streaks through towns about forty feet wide,
but me and that Mercury stayed side by side.

My brother was pale, he said he was sick,
he said he was just a nervous wreck.
But why should I worry, for what the heck,
me and that Mercury was still neck-and-neck.
Now on through the deserts we did glide,
a-flyin' low and a-flyin' wide,
me an' that Mercury was a-takin' a ride,
and we stayed exactly side by side.

Now I looked in my mirror and I saw somethin' comin',
I thought it was a plane by the way it was a-runnin'.
It was a-hummin' along at a terrible pace,
and I knew right then it was the end of the race.

When it flew by us, I turned the other way,
the guy in the Mercury had nothin' to say,
for it was a kid, in a hopped up Model-A.

I'll stop now. Sorry, music is my thing.

I like me some good pipes music.  "Scotland the Brave" and "Amazing Grace" are favorites of mine when done with pipes.

Sure, you combine a bunch of unrelated frequencies and all their harmonics and subharmonics together with the skirl of a single random frequency constant tone (J# or K♭) and it's bound to appeal to just about everybody.

What's not to like?

But yeah. Tina Turner was, and still is, incredible. Her music formed a HUGE part of my teenage soundtrack because she got so much air play.

What always shocked me is that they only had one Billboard Hot 100 number one -- What's Love Got To Do With It

Her other songs were big hits, but nothing good enough to make number 1.

German sub after a big fire.

Very reminiscent of engineering spaces on the boats I served on. A little more primitive but not much.
The trick is knowing what each of those valves do and when to use them, not just by memory but deep down in your soul.

First time I ever heard pan pipes was from a Peruvian "street band" performing in Denver during one of my lunch hour walks.. They were great, and I hung around listening long enough that I was late getting back.  I put two (2) whole bucks in the hat, they were that good.  Two, mind you.

Maybe my old ears, but one of those pipes sounds a little off frequency?

Aren't those the valves you need to flush the head?
