Personal Honor takes a holiday/Queen bed shopping
« on: February 21, 2010, 03:44:44 PM »
So, I call about a bed offered on Craigslist. My questions answered, I offered a generous premium over the asking price for the seller to deliver. He agrees.

The appointed hour arrives, no bed. An hour and a half elapse, no bed, no call. I call the seller. Remember me? "Uh, my daughter sold it to someone else, and I forgot to call you. Sorry."  My life seems chock full of poor communication and disappointment of late. Why do I hamper myself with the apparently outmoded notion that one keeps their word when given?

So, any suggestions for bed shopping generally, or specific to DFW?

Thanks for reading.

Craigslist sucks.  I've been trying to buy a couch on CL for the past six months.  No one seems to get that when you offer something for sale and someone accepts that offer, that it is not then ok to change your mind/sell to someone else/disappear/fail to give a comprehensible address/generally flake out.

We are very, very happy with our Ikea bed.  We got the king size mattress from the as-is section for $100--75% off the retail.  When we change the sheets, we enjoy looking at the grayish dirty spot that saved us $300  =)

The bed itself we got at retail, but it was still a good deal.  We did end up damaging it in assembly--which is easier with a king and a queen--but we took it apart again, thoroughly glued/clamped/let cure the damaged area and have had no problems other than the 24 hour delay in mid-assembly.

Downside: no store shipping, so we rented a truck.  Upside: no furniture salesmen.

Am I the only one creeped out enough regarding prior occupants to not buy a used mattress?  :O

Given some of the previous threads on this forum... probably not.

Until specified otherwise I am assuming he was shopping for a bed frame not a bed mattress....

FTR, it was a complete set, including frame, mattress, spring, and a stylish headboard, obviously gentlt/unused. I wouldn't ordinarily consider used bedding, but a) money's tight and it was a screaming deal at $400, and b) I heard about this wondrous invention called a washable mattress cover.

It's what gets past them, and under them.  :O

I bought a saddle on CL last summer.  The deal went fine.

Last year I bought a nice kitchen table and four chairs, a coffee table with two matching end tables, and a pair of wood end tables from a couple different sellers on Craigslist.  Grand total, $100.  I'm very happy with Craigslist.  Though it sounds like I had a run of good sellers.

Stop being so crabby. =D I've seen brand new beds on CL, in a guest room never used, etc.

It has been my experience that most people on CL are flakes!!!!  I have been trying to sell a pop up camper for a week now.  The first two people showed up without the vehicle they were going to put it on.  I have had 2 no shows.  One guy sent about 10 emails asking all these questions, made plans to come and did not show.  Another guy drove an hour to see it with his car.  In my area these things will go for a premium in a month or two.  A week or two before burning man, I can get $3000 for it.  I am asking what I bought it for, it's sitting in the space I want to put my new trailer.

Craigslist is an awesome place to score guns, if you read code ok...

Got an FN Mauser for 50 bones this past summer.  It isn't pristine by any measure, but I always wanted one.

On the used bedding... hey, if you can live with it, more power to ya.  If money was that tight, I'd likely consider it too, better than sleeping on the floor.

I have a nice air mattress for temporary use, but my back needs a bed. I work with medical professionals adjacent to a hospital. There is a creep factor associated with a used bed, but given the stories I hear, it's relatively minor. I feel for the souls who'll sleep on the bed I just donated to Salvation Army.
