Made this last night. I got a nice ≈3# prime chuck roast. Used a packet of Lipton onion soup mix instead of the Au Jus. I also added about an ounce or so of the pepperoncini liquid to the bottom of the crock-pot.
I'm a 2nd shift worker (3-11pm) so I started the crock-pot when I went to bed at 2am, and woke up to an amazing smelling house.
Had it for lunch/breakfast over some mashed potatoes. Really outstanding! Fork tender, delicious and super easy. =D =D

Slow cookers are truly one of the great culinary devices of the 20th century.
I had no idea that the first slow cookers apparently came out in the 1930s/40s... I know a lot of stoves back then had "deep well" cooker units that acted like slow cookers. The stove in the house I grew up in had a deep well cooker unit and my Mom would very occasionally use it. Someone gave us an Crock Pot for Christmas in the 1970s and I don't think the deep well was ever used again.
