Texas Meet and greet in Dec?
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:58:46 AM »
I really need to get the effin hell out of the house for a few days.   [ar15]
I'm looking at the 19th-21st of Dec.  I know its a sunday through tuesday but its the only thing I can personally pulloff.
I'm in the Houston suburbs.
I'm thinking Camping/fishing sounds like just the ticket.
My first proposal is the Guadalupe river near New Braunfels.  Its Texas' premier fly fishing river.  Just the ticket in my book.
There is a campground right on the river.

I am, however, open to suggestions that are less than 5 hours from Houston.
Any takers?

Sounds like fun.  If I lived within 2 states, and had a worthwhile amount of vacation time I'd be there.

Just a bit too far for me to go just before Christmas.

Maybe in the spring.

I heard my 3wt calling me in my sleep a few nights ago.  Dreamed about laying a dry fly out into the back of a riffle and watching a fat rainbow slurp it from the surface.
Okay going to stay here

I should be there late morning on Sunday the 19th.  Planning to fish all day monday and tuesday and go home after dark tuesday.  Two nights camping.

Looks like the campground is right in the special regulation area (artificials only, one trout per day over 18") which is right where I want to be.

Just spoke to the campground, no reservations needed.

who's in?

First round of trout released Friday.  From what I am hearing the bites were few and the set hooks far between.   On that note let me know when you come down.  New braunfels is my stomping ground.  As long as I am off work we can meet for lunch.  If i had a 3/4 wt rid I would join you.  Sadly I only own 7/8.

Sounds like a good time. I scoped out some streams East of Salt Lake City when I was up there a couple of weeks ago. Going back in April for my daughters graduation. Going to spend a week up there fishing this year instead of our annual pilgrimage to Elkins Wv.

Don't go east. Wasting your time unless you go all the way to the middle Weber or the Middle Provo.  April will still have snow on the ground at elevation, and there might be runoff which wrecks the small stuff.  Go down to Provo and up Provo canyon.  When you reach the park on the right, cross the river and park.  You can access it from there and its some of the best fishing around.  You will need waders to do most of the river.  Watch for deep holes, you can get in a trouble in a hurry.
Griffth's nat or midge with a WD40 or BHE dropper is a winner on here.  4 wt 8 foot rod for the win.

Waco would be doable. New Braunfels is a little bit of a drive from North Central Texas. I live right by one of the biggest lakes in the Nation, Lake Texoma.

I think for this trip I'm sticking to the Guadalupe.

Maybe a late spring meetup somewhere as central as possible with as much available, over a weekend and with advanced warning.

Sounds like a good time, but not that close to Christmas.

Ehh, I don't have a fly rod either...

Another nice place is Bastrop....lots of trees. I'm down for anywhere there are trees (soooo tired of mesquite).

I'll be in San Antonio that weekend. I might drop in to say hello Monday on my way back to Dallas.

I am out.  Wife's got a doctor's appointment, she's been trying to get in for months and finally they called her with a cancellation.  Going to hafta start planning long range for something more solid I think.
