This just in -- a lake bed has filled with water -- just as it has done for centuries. CLIMATE CHAAAAAAANGE!!!
I'm sure I would feel differently if I lived there -- but I don't, and I wouldn't, because in my neanderthal mentality building in a flood plain is dumb. Back in the early 1970s I took a graduate-level course in planning, in which the instructor correctly noted that everybody competes to build infrastructure (roads, railroads, houses, factories, and towns) where it's easiest to do so. And it just happens that the easiest place is more often than not the flood plans, because they are generally fairly flat and level.
But once you put infrastructure in a flood plain, you then have to deal with -- [drumroll, please] -- flooding.
The only real surprise here is that anyone is surprised that a LAKE is filling up with water when snow in its watershed area melts.

We just broke a record from 1899: most consecutive days below 60deg. It was 150 days, and we're at I think 154 right now. Which means the same thing happened for pretty much the same amount of time, in 1899. As well as many other years between then and now. Mentioning the years with ~145 days doesn't contribute to the OMG! stories though.

Some things you really can't control, but each time I moved, I checked out the area and verified where the flood plains were. Likewise "known" underground pipelines and possible "right of ways" for roads and railroads.
I didn't build or buy in several places because of this type of uncertainty. There's a very large dam nearby, and I made sure that not only am I upstream, I'm WELL above (actually, over 100 ft above) the level of the dam spillway.
It would seem from the story that many Californians didn't do similar due diligence.

So what I take away from it is:
-less pistachios and almonds. OK, fine.
-those farms are under water, so they will not be consuming water from the Colorado River.
-the land under these farms has subsided nearly 30 feet due to drinking out the aquifers. One might hope that a good bit of this flood water will recharge the aquifers in the region.
-there will be considerable silt migration. In some ways a fast moving flood could strip top soil away and ruin farmland, but silt deposit could also reinvigorate farmland.
Seems to me California is missing a huge opportunity here. It's time to re-establish Tulare lake. Turn it into a reservoir and be a good custodian of its drainage and capacities. If Tulare lake used to be the largest fresh water body west of the Mississippi and existed naturally, what numb *expletive deleted*ck decided to drain it, then turn it into farmland, and irrigate it from a sandstone riverbed 200 miles away (Lakes Mead and Havasu and the Colorado River)?

Seems to me California is missing a huge opportunity here. It's time to re-establish Tulare lake. Turn it into a reservoir and be a good custodian of its drainage and capacities.
This would lessen the California state government's ability to claim they are in a major drought the next time there is string of sunny days. Got to have as many crises as possible to beat down their subjects.

Exactly right. I forget the name of the project, but it was a single reservoir/dam, that had it been built, would have made every drought since a nothingburger. The proposal was even backed by Gov Moonbeam during his first stint back in 1975. The enviros still killed it.

My answer is "No." The problem is that they confuse "climate change" with "climate."
When people start lecturing me about "climate change," I ask if they know how Greenland got its name. They don't of course. When I point out that the Vikings called it "Greenland" because it was, like, green, and that the Vikings had lived an agrarian society on Greenland from around 900 A.D. to around 1400 A.D. -- they get glassy eyed. When I mention that the Vikings finally abandoned Greenland because it got too cold, their brains lock up.
When it gets too hot to farm on Greenland, come talk to me about global warmulating.

I did see this down toward the bottom.
During his talk, Kerry thanked his "buddy" Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture, who also pioneered plans to prioritize federal agriculture loans based on race and moved to withdraw school lunch funding from school districts that didn't allow male students to use girls' bathrooms and locker rooms. Vilsak defended his race-based approach to funding farmers by saying, essentially, that discriminating against white farmers in the present is a way to correct discrimination against black farmers in the past. A court disagreed.

I was thinking some of it in Africa might be dust and dry conditions, but I imagine some of these countries have dirtier fuel, poor engine emissions standards for vehicles and small engines, low standards for the bigger factories and power stations as well. I guess that adds up. Judging by the article, I am not sure if this study sought to determine the cause of the particulate at all.
When I did the emissions reporting for a small plant some years ago, we had to report particulate emissions for every emissions point. You expect it for the exhaust stacks, but it also is reported for stuff like steam vents on deaerators and the cooling towers which are largely just water vapor. Chemicals are added to steam systems and cooling water systems to prevent corrosion and that stuff ends up going out the vent.
I figure most of our improvement is motor vehicle emissions standards and cleaner fuel.

Believe that's a measurement of the air pollution experience by the populous. The majority of Greenland pop is probably concentrated in just a few small areas thus concentrating the population experienced by that pop which drives the numbers up.

Quite correct. Recent attempts to turn this around and resume mining seem to have generated more paperwork than mineral resources. Makes you wonder how much money the CCP is funneling into the hands of the environmental bureaucracy or other useful idiots.

Even if they didn't turn the entire area into a reservoir, it ought to occur to someone that digging a big reservoir out of part of the area would go a long way to solving their water problems. I would think Arizona and Nevada would start making that point very loud and clear considering their water shortages.

Dams and reservoirs DID occur to many people, including Old Man Governor Brown and also Gov Brown JR during both his terms. These guys were big democrats and they still got kiboshed by the enviros, hippies, Sierra Club, etc.

Those maps aren't very significant to me. They're mixing / allowing too many variables into the results, including level of medical care and population density and household air conditioning (or lack thereof) and who knows what the hell else.
Greeenland should not be a surprise. If you have a population of two, and one dies of particulate damage (like powdered snow), voila!, you have a 50% death rate. I'm not really just joking here, but presenting an example of possibilities for statistical hokeyage. (I just now invented that word.)
What I do see is "hot and dry" = 'high particulate levels," and "hot and dry" = "equatorial-temperate regions." The Sahara, I am told, is a terrific generator of dust pollution in the region.

I remember an old SciFi short story like that. Seems like this is not a global warming solution. This is a "the sun is expanding" solution a good ways into the future. We have a little time to think about it.

A Montana judge has sided with youth activists who argued that state agencies’ use of fossil fuels and its impact on the environment violated their constitutional rights.
District Court Judge Kathy Seeley found the state’s policy used to evaluate requests for fossil fuel permits is unconstitutional because it does not force agencies to evaluate the effects of greenhouse gas emissions.
Judge Seeley wrote that "Montana's emissions and climate change have been proven to be a substantial factor in causing climate impacts to Montana's environment and harm and injury" to the youth.
"As fires rage in the West, fueled by fossil fuel pollution, today's ruling in Montana is a game-changer that marks a turning point in this generation's efforts to save the planet from the devastating effects of human-caused climate chaos," Olson said.

It seems to me that is often the case with sciences that try to predict things or evaluate how often things have happened. Over time, we learn that certain types of events happen more often than predicted, have happened more often in the past, and have happened more recently in the past.

California is seeking information about the locations of classic cars in the state and the tendencies of their drivers after considering establishing “zero emissions zones,” according to a state survey obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) sent out the survey about light-duty vehicles made in model year 1978 or earlier on Aug. 2, seeking information from respondents about tendencies they have while using the classic vehicles, including the county in which they are primarily driven. The survey on classic cars follows a 2019 CARB draft report which suggests that the state should “provide explicit authority to local jurisdictions to create zero-emission zones” in order to combat climate change.
The survey also asks respondents to specify how many miles are registered on the odometers of their classic cars and approximate annual mileage, as well as the frequency and distance travelled of their cruises. California has the most classic car collectors of any state in the country, according to RotoWire.
A “zero emissions zone” is “an area where only zero-emission vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists are granted unrestricted access” that is intended to help counter climate change, according to The International Council on Clean Transportation.

If it were true, I would assume they are trying to count every step in coffee production from the farming all the way to your coffee cup. Seems suspect as people aren't going to just drink water as an alternative. They are going to go for some other drink that also has an imaginary CO2 cost.

I am cracking up at this USA Today article that popped up on my feed. They are complaining about Greenland becoming green and how it will destroy the Earth. A major part of their story is telling the reader that Greenland will be green just like it WAS 1000 years ago, and this is why it is a global warming disaster.
If USA Today were around 1000 years ago, they'd be crying about the coming ice age that will destroy the Earth. This is another great example for me illustrating how people don't understand planetary timescales.

Thanks for that. My response for the last several years to anyone who yapped at me about global warming or "climate change" has been to point out that for 500 years (roughly 900 A.D. to 1400 A.D.) the Vikings lived an agrarian society in Greenland (which was not named "Green" land because it was covered in snow), and that they abandoned Greenland when it became too cold. If Greenland is now "at risk" of becoming green again, aren't we just getting back to where we were 1000 years ago?
When it starts to get too hot to farm on Greenland, we'll sit down and talk about global warming.

We would do well to copy China's climate policy. They are using coal because it's reliable and because they have coal resources. They are smart enough to understand that every coal plant they build grows their economy without making them more dependent on foreign oil. They are also the world's leading producers of solar, wind, and hydropower (which the US has lost the will to build). And despite all the coal , their emissions per capita is still way lower than the US.
Who cares about the coal; they are already winning in terms of climate policy.
Agreed that the alarmism focuses exclusively on the negative aspects of climate change and downplay or outright don't admit that there could be neutral or positive effects. What's interesting about this is that it's essentially a conservative take. Climate orthodoxy believes that things are best the way they are, and any change will certainly be worse, seasoned with a little bit of moral panic that if we don't stop it everything will reach a tipping point and descend into chaos. Analyzed objectively, climate alarmism is 100% conservative impulse. What's interesting is that groups with liberal instincts on other issues have decided to indulge in conservative watchguardism on climate; it seems to be their chosen outlet. Meanwhile groups that consider themselves conservative, rather than agree on climate, which adversarial politics doesn't permit them to do, predictably act as the stooges they accuse the other side of being and "randomly" choose this issue to have a liberal outlook....don't worry about it man, it will probably be fine, plus who cares if the climate does change, change is good and just as likely to be better anyway, nothing bad could possibly happen by recklessly changing our environment, let's just do it and see what happens, etc.

At some point, large corporations are going to have to decide that the loss of revenue in commie states like NY and CA is worth it in the long run. It's time for corps to say "no", and while it might be detrimental to them in the short term, at some point, even the most progressive commie residents of states like CA will start complaining when they can't buy cars or other goods that are illegal in CA. Just like how San Francisco recently folded on "not doing business with conservative states". Also, from the science side (if you are to give credence to their flawed thesis), with the Earth's water cycle essentially being a closed system, "rising sea levels" are essentially just redistributing the weight of a fixed amount of water over around 0.0001% of the Earth's surface (essentially the continental/marine interface). If that change has some probability of releasing some fault pressure to cause an earthquake, it has an equal probability to stabilize fault pressure and prevent a quake. And again, only over the continental/marine interface.

Back in the "dark ages" when I was in college, a geophysical professor showed us evidence that the North American continent had been depressed into the mantle during the "Ice Ages". Because of that incredible weight, he pointed out that even now, 10,000 years later, the northern parts of the continent were still "rebounding", albeit slowly. The fractures in the crust that formed when the continent was pushed away from Europe by the forces of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, are also part of what pushed up the Appalachian Mountains. Quakes on the East Coast also travel further because of the more solid nature of the bedrock as opposed to the softer alluvial strata of the West Coast. Those softer rocks, frequently sedimentary (shale, sandstone, etc.), absorb the quakes vibrations.
