What's with all the orange flavoring in everything?
« on: November 26, 2018, 05:46:17 AM »
Seems like an awful lot of things are now orange flavored.  My melatonin, my soluble fiber, my vitamin C tablets, and one or two other things I can't remember right now.

Well, the vitamin C I can understand.

But next thing you know, there'll be orange flavored steak sauce.

What, was there a super-salesman for orange flavoring who went around the whole country peddling Hectostearyl n-monobinclatinen polyphosgynyl sulphynate or whatever the artificial stuff is?  A Johnny Orangeflavoringseed?

I like oranges and I love orange juice, but jeeze, it seems like it's everywhere now.

I haven't noticed this trend, but I've been buying things like vitamins from the same on-line source for 25 or 30 years, so as long as they don't mess with their formulae I'm safe.

Years ago, I was reading in a pharmacy journal about compounding (making your own medications) by custom pharmacies. Orange and wild cherry flavors were the best for masking the taste of bitter or unpalatable medications while grape was the most popular with children.

What did they use to mask the flavor of the wild cherry? Yuck, poo, ick.

And soluble fiber is almost tastless, or at least as neutral as you can get. I put it in a salt shaker and sprinkle a little on just about everything. On some things, the flavor just don't work nohow.

I think there's a secret group of clandestine operatives trying to foist that flavoring agent down our throats.  I heard it's even in contrails nowadays.  And in the water to mask the taste of the fluorides.

Damned secret group of clandestine operatives !  You can take your hectostearyl n-monobinclatinen polyphosgynyl sulphynate
 and shove it !

Baby aspirin. It's been orange flavored for nearly 100 years, apparently.

The only "steak sauce" I want on my steak is what comes out of the steak.

Quite the early adopter of e-commerce.

Regarding the OP, my guess is that orange is an established, very inexpensive flavoring that is relatively widely enjoyed and can easily be made strong enough to cover many less desirable flavors, especially acidic or bitter ones.  While I'm sure some people don't like orange flavoring, it's probably far less than would be put off by artificial banana or something.

Pure orange oil also makes a good cleaner and antiseptic.  It is used in hospitals.

The orange hides the flavor of the G-23 Paxilon Hydrochlorate.

You want to get me to puke, give me artificial banana flavored whatever.

OK, St. Joseph's Children's Aspirin was introduced in 1947 or so. I thought it was introduced a couple of decades earlier.

And holy crap...

according to this article, fake banana flavoring was available in the United States BEFORE the Civil War, and before the general introduction of real bananas!

Especially since MOSAIC is ~25 years old.

I recall ordering something from a pre-Mosaic BBS back in the day. Had to phone in the CC# afterward, but otherwise a pretty simple process.

There's plenty of online suppliers that were around before the internet. Back then we called it "mail-order."
