What American accent do you have?
« on: January 15, 2007, 08:03:32 AM »
Amusing little test to determine what accent of American English you speak.

http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have

Results can be...strange.  Mine is:

Your accent is as Philadelphian as a cheesesteak! If you're not from Philadelphia, then you're from someplace near there like south Jersey, Baltimore, or Wilmington. if you've ever journeyed to some far off place where people don't know that Philly has an accent, someone may have thought you talked a little weird even though they didn't have a clue what accent it was they heard.

I've never been east of Columbus Ohio, and I've lived in the west for 31 years.
I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

My result:

"The Inland North:

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop.""

Pretty accurate, except it's "soda," not "pop."

Midland, which is nonsense because I've been told I have a distinct southern accent.

Inland North.  Man, that couldn't be farther from the truth.  Methinks someone didn't put a lot of effort into making this little tool right.

"The West," here. While that's right for me, the quiz is far too short to really nail them down. I found something similar once that went in more depth and seemed more accurate for others. I can't remember where it is though, and it's not in my bookmarks. If I find it, I'll post it.

Mine's Central Pennsylvania German.

I don't need no stinking quiz to tell me that.

Of course, that does come back to a Midland accent.

And Chris, I've never thought of you having a particularly pronounced southern accent.

Michele yes, but you? No. Were I to have to guess, not knowing where you're originally from, I'd say you grew up in Northern Missouri, Iowa, or Illinois

I'm from Alaska, if we have an accent it's usually picked up from the last person we talked to.  There's a distinct Northwestern accent that lacks the twang and such of the West, it's very mellow.

But mine came up "the Northeast" which is wrong because those folks talk funny.  I should know, because that's where my parents are from after all...  ohhhhhh  grin

Heh.  I've spent much of my life further south than she.

I got called out the other week during a ride for having a Southern accent.  Guy wanted to know where I was from because of it.

It varies.  I've actually had folks think I was from overseas.  Dunno where that came from, but ok.

It said I was a limey.

Alternatively, I could say that those of you who achieved the result 'Inland North' answered the quiz correctly.

Inland North, which is correct.

Incidentally, us folks from uppy nort in Green Bay call it "Pop" and we drank from a public "bubbler"
My cousins from down south (they lived in a southern suburb of Chicago) called it "soda", and they drank from a "water fountain".

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.
I have grown up and lived my entire life in Texas and not all in Houston.  Grew up mostly in a small town.  Talk to me sometimes and tell me I don't have an accent.

This quiz is incredibly weak.  It combines large groups of areas that do not have the same accent.  "The South" combines quite a number of accents.  The site creator must be a yankee.  Cheesy

I recent took a road trip through Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama, and I know people from Louisiana.  Those states all have different accents.  I really liked the Mississippi accent this one girl had.  When listening to the radio in Alabama, the unique accent was obvious.  I didn't notice much accent in Arkansas, but I didn't talk to many people there.

I got Midland too, which is right for me, since I was born and spent my first ten years in Ohio.  Never picked up any of the weirdness of New Hampshire or, thank God, Long Island.

North east, probably NY.  Which is correct, that is where I grew up.  But no one has ever accused me of having the dreaded "NY accent."

Another midland. I can go along with their definition of "no accent". I've lived in MD, VA, NC, WA and now NM, so I'm sure some of that stuff got blended together.
5 minutes on the phone with my Dad, however, and the NC comes right back!

Your Result: The West

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

It got me dead on. I'd like to see a longer, more detailed one too though.

In my case, this quiz is all wrong.

It rated me as having a Philidelphia accent. I'm from Georgia. I get mistaken for a Texan.
