Long-term SHTF desserts
« on: May 22, 2009, 01:23:41 PM »
Most of us have eaten pre-packaged desserts like granola bars, twinkies, candy bars, boxed cookies, and oatmeal cream pies. We've all had Little Debbie's snacks and sugary cereal. Almost none of it tastes as good as the stuff made from mixes or scratch. Another problem is shelf life. The only things that would still be good after 8 or 9 years would be expensive dehydrated goods, canned ingredients such as pie fillings and fruit, or sealed jars of sweeteners like honey or mollasses. Nothing that could be eaten with the fingers.

I think that companies should can things like donuts, cakes, pastries, and cookies (some of my favorite desserts). They already can brown bread. Why not ready made desserts? Even if the prices were too high for survivalists to buy in bulk they would still make cool novelty foods. In any case, why shouldn't the victims of nuclear war be able to enjoy something they had in the past?

If anyone who reads this works for a canning company please consider my proposal.

I thought Twinkies last that long w/o any special treatment...

Or so we've heard.

As one of the resident Mormons here, I give that a hearty thumbs up! Although when I think of some of the gelatin-based abominations I've seen... :shudder:

I've never heard of it before. Likewise whole canned chicken. How long does powdered gelatin last? I would imagine most powdered mixes would last a long time.

here you go

That isn't as expensive as I thought it would be. I still prefer baked goods and donuts, though.

That won't last 15 years and can't be bought in a grocery store. Canned baked goods would probably taste better too, since less preservatives would be needed. I bet they taste better than a twinkie, though.

No, I almost completely lost it doing Atkins. It's amazing how powerful insulin is.

Also, I've only drank diet soda for years now. I can't stand regular soda, unless it's diluted with lots of ice.

How about Jello pudding?  I usually keep a few in the "aw crap" bunker of Alcazar del Tejon.

I order from the folks @ Emergency Essentials.  May want to try them:

That's decent stuff. Thanks for the link, although I don't have any money to spare for stocking up now. I probably won't be in a position to do that until I am finished with my education and living on my own. Until then I won't have any extra space. Even then most of my income will probably be going used for rent, car insurance, and necessities.

I have just about completely lost mine. Birthday cake is the worst. Blech. I have to gag it down at parties.

The only sweet things I like anymore are gummy bears without all the "Extreem! Sour Coating!" crap, certain types of ice cream, and nut brittle.

What do Mormons have to do with Jello?

Utah has (or had, prior to 1999, Wikipedia says it's Iowa now) the highest rate of per-capita jello consumption in the US.

Its all those Jello/CoolWhip/Marshmellow fluff deserts you find at potlucks and family dinners in Iowa.

I've had a box of granola bars in one of my hunting seats for at least five years, maybe more.  I got hungry and ate one a couple of years ago.  It wasn't too bad.  I think I have a few left.  Maybe I'll test one.

What do Mormons have to do with Jello?

They invented it, and it's like a national dish in Utah.....

We didn't invent it, Peter Cooper did in 1845; but it is the official State Snack of Utah.
