Learned how to drive in a '27 Buick on our farm. Got first license with '36 Indian jr. Scout motorcycle. First car license with '40 Nash convertible. Seems like you folks are all very young.

"My dad's '69 F-100. Three on the column, power nuthin'. "

I have a truck just like that.... want it, come get it it's yours Smiley Mwahahaa...

Anyways....

1979 Lincoln Mark V. 250,000 miles when I got to it. 400ci "medium-block", 2bbl carb, RV cam and head work making somewhere in the region of 500lb-ft of torque at ~1800rpm, 3 speed auto via heavy duty C6, and a whopping 2.47:1 final drive. Car could easily hit 80mph in first gear, and spun the tires so fast from a stop there was no squeal, just a whir and smoke.

Drove it through high school too, it was sweet... digital AM/FM quad tape, moonroof, power everything, autmoatic lights and dimming, built in CB, I was on cloud nine. Except for the 8mpg part, since I worked to pay my own insurance and fuel bills.

To this day I'm unafraid of driving large vehicles :-D

Hey man, those were the days of REAL driving. Smiley

My dad has always hated having extra "conveniences" on his vehicles -- just something else to break as far as he's concerned. He was hotter than a pistol when he traded the old F-100 in for an F-150 and found out power brakes were standard (still got the manual steering). By the time he traded that in for an F-250, he was stuck with power everything.

I still remember steering could be a bear on the old trucks if ya didn't get going just a little bit first. Never needed to go to the gym back then though... Smiley

1986 Ford Escort w/5 speed manual.  Learning on a manual transmission makes life so much easier, if you ask me.
I learned on a 1991 escort 5-speed. Good car to learn on, and I'd only ever teach a new driver on a stick.

61 chevy, three speed, no power steering, about five turns lock to lock, six cylinder with the optional bolt on oil filter. What a tank. It had 200 and something miles on it when my sister and I learned the art of clutch abuse.

For the amusment of you youngsters who have never had the pleasure, it had vacuum tubes in the radio. Took about a minute to warm up.

I don't even remember... I think my father had a Subaru at the time, and the driving school I used had Peugeots - I think.

It amazes me that there are full grown adults in this world that can't drive a stick.
Most of them are 'murricans. Smiley Where I come from, if you take the test on an automatic, you get a code in your licence that says you can only drive automatics. At least it used to be that way, and the only reason to take your test on an automatic would be a physical handicap.

Actually, I learned to drive a couple of years after I got my licence, when I got a job driving mail trucks. Although I could legally drive the vehicles in question, newbies were given several weeks of training, some of which was driving with instructors. I remember my first trip ever in a delivery truck (7.5 metric tons), it was in heavy city traffic. The instructor told me to stop in a busy street and parallel park the truck in a space just vacated by a small car. I honestly thought the space was shorter than the length of the truck, but I did get it in - with inches to spare. Smiley

1978 Chevrolet El Camino with a 3-liter V6 and a 3-speed manual.  Got an '82 Firebird when I turned 16, but eventually sold it and went back to the Elco.

1959 Chevy Apache Fleetside pickup with a six and three on the tree when I was 12. It had Armstrong power steering and 2/60 air conditioning. My cousin had a track in the field beside the barn. As far as I know, that truck would only turn left. I know we wore our two sets of right front wheel bearings. He paid $50 for that old truck.
Back then you could buy pretty good running cars (at least field grade) for $50 all day.

'68 Buick Le Sabre, when you learn to parallel park one of these, everything else is a breeze. Learned to use mirrors on my Dad's '69 Dodge Tradesman van, 225 slant six, three on the tree.

This is the kind of thread I like to read.  I learned to drive in a '78 Malibu Classic, and I taught myself to drive a stick in a '72 F-100 with the three on the tree and a 240 straight six.  There was no power anything in that truck, and it was great.  I wish I still had it, I'd love to keep it around to use as a ranch truck and such.  The only other notable vehicle I've had was an '87 F-250 with a 460 and the extended cab and long bed.  Once I learned to parallel park that monster, nothing was impossible.
Hm.  Maybe I need to go find some old beater truck.  I'm sure my bride would be thrilled.

My father's 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.  I bought that car from him right after high school graduation, and drove it until it's death in 1995, when I got my now departed and sorely missed Chevy Beretta.

I learned on my parents Dodge Coronet 500 station wagon.
Used it for dates, too.  The fold down seats in the back sure came in handy!

Neither of my parents drove so I figured I would learn to drive in the schools drivers ed program.  They took 2 students out at a time and a girl I didn't know drove first.  If possible she was even more nervous than me.  We were crusing down the highway going about 45 when the instructor said make the next right.  She did everything right except brake first.  I still can't belive that 69 Fury didn't roll.  After that I was a mess.

After my whopping 8 hours of training I found I did not know enough to pass a driving test.  I made arangements with the Father of a schoolmate to buy his 53 Chevy Delux for $ 95.00 (three installments).  Part of the deal was he would let me practice on his car which was a 65 LTD wagon with a 6 cyl and no power anything.  I made it on that beast and then beat the 53 for a year or so until I could upgrade.  Man those were the days.

The first car I ever drove (if you can call going straight and not turning the wheel driving) was a 78 Turbo Regal.  Cool car.  I actually learned to drive on a late 80's Impala and a 87 GMC 2500 van.  My grandpa decided that I should learn to drive and whenever we went out, he let me drive whatever he was driving at the time.

I know for a fact that hell is a one lane highway with no speed limit...and you're always stuck behind some soccer mom in a minivan doing 35mph.

Mom taught me in a '92 Explorer with a 5-speed.  I drove that thing throughout my teenage driving years without so much as two-wheeling it.  According to my sister, I drive like my grandmother Smiley  Well, grandma doesn't get tickets!

Then I graduated to a '77 Celica, but it had a bad valve, so I wound up in a 1974 Dodge Dart Special Edition.  It would top out at around 72, and was carved out of a single block of steel, Michaelangelo style.  I had a little fender-bender with a Mitsubishi Eclipse (he ran the stop sign.  Cop saw it!).  It bent my bumper about 3 degrees, and unseamed his car.  *sigh*...  I miss that car.
