I learned to drive with my dad's '74 Ford LTD- four doors and a nasty 429 4 barrel. Would pass everything on the road except a gas station.  Same for my mom's '70 Thunderbird, but it had a modicum more 'cool' to it.  From there it devolved a bit. My first car was a 1949 Ford 2 door with a flathead V8 and a 3 on the tree. Still have it.

72 Ford Bronco, and as with many others it would seem, it had the "Armstrong power steering", and 3 on the tree.  Parents also had an early 80's datsun pickup and similar vintage subaru.  No automatics for me.   Fun rides all...

1986 Ford Escort w/5 speed manual.  Learning on a manual transmission makes life so much easier, if you ask me.
Me too!  Cheesy

And yes, it does.  IMHO, learning on a stick teaches a fundamental focus on the driving process itself.  Autos are just too easy--there's not much to learn, and I don't think most people have enough difficulty with it that they learn the same focus required when initially learning to drive a manual.  And once you've learned to drive a manual, it's like riding a bike:  you never forget how.

A beast.

1960 Chevrolet Apache 20:

3/4 ton fleetside
235 straight six, 1-bbl carburetor
manual choke
4-speed granny transmission (1st-gear creeper)
2-speed rear axle
hydraulic clutch (thank Gawd!)
torsion bar front suspension
manual steering
manual brakes
on-dash throttle
floor-mounted emergency brake, right next to the shifter (grabbed the driveshaft when engaged)

For my driver's license test, I had to parallel park the beast.  I had popeye forearms for several years when I drove that old girl.  Cheesy

I found a pic of a '60 Apache 10 stepside that looks somewhat like my Apache 20 fleetside:

You're a lucky man.  I love those old Apaches.  I told my sister the other day that she should buy an older pre-'80s truck with a standard transmission and keep it around to teach her son to drive.  She didn't appear to appreciate my genius.

First year Dodge Omni and a '77 Vega (parent's cars).  The Omni had non-working turn signals, and the Vega had no power. Nor did the Vega have good cornering characteristics, as I learned to my lament one day while driving east of the hometown.  Of course, putting the Vega in the ditch DID have the bonus of freaking out my little sister, who was riding along for some reason.

1967 Fairline 500 with 3 on the tree manual.  I also have to own autos now due to bad left knee.  Still drive stick shifts from time to time. Kinda fun.  But long drives/in town get my leg to hurting. Sad

Dad figured I need to learn how to drive more when I was 15.. told me the keys were in the truck and to take it for some laps in our parking lot.  A 1988 Ford F250 w/ a Diesel engine... this was in 1995.  Seemed to work out okay for me.  No instructions necessary, apparently.  However, I was not the favorite fan of the driver's ed teacher... which was also my 3rd grade school teacher.

Regarding people that can't drive as adults, here's one for you:

I had a great uncle that died when I was 8 years old or so, maybe a bit younger.  He was a drunk by anybody's measure.  He went out fishing with his new girlfriend by a pond and parked the van at the top of the hill.  Well, after some time the van started rolling foward down the hill toward the pond, so the great uncle figured he'd better stop it.  Got in front of the thing thinking he could slow it down.  Nope.  Van rolled on top of him and pinned him down in about 12" of water -- wheel on his chest.  Girlfriend didn't know how to drive AT ALL (she took a bike to the funeral) and went running off for help while he drowned.  She didn't know enough to start the van up and put it in reverse it seems.

Wait, did the mods delete the spambot post? Because it looks like it was fistful's doing.

Either way, it's still his fault.  =D

Anyways, I learned to drive in a 1990 Ford F250 (in which I learned to drive stick) and a 1993 Mercury Villager, which is what I took my driving test in.

For me, the approximate sequence of learning was tricycle, bicycle, radio flyer with the handle backward, farmall tractors, golf carts, minibikes, backhoes and bulldozers, go-carts, pickup trucks, semi trucks, and then I turned 16 and got my "learner permit" in my parents' old grand-am.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

81 VW Rabbit convertible.  However, I took the test in my Dad's 89 4runner because it was the only rig we had that would have passed the little safety inspection.
