Lawmaker Seeks to End Sexy Cheerleading

By APRIL CASTRO

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Friday night lights in Texas could soon be without bumpin' and grindin' cheerleaders. Legislation filed by Rep. Al Edwards would put an end to "sexually suggestive" performances at athletic events and other extracurricular competitions.

"It's just too sexually oriented, you know, the way they're shaking their behinds and going on, breaking it down," said Edwards, a 26-year veteran of the Texas House. "And then we say to them, 'don't get involved in sex unless it's marriage or love, it's dangerous out there' and yet the teachers and directors are helping them go through those kind of gyrations."

Under Edwards' bill, if a school district knowingly permits such a performance, funds from the state would be reduced in an amount to be determined by the education commissioner.

Edwards said he filed the bill as a result of several instances of seeing such ribald performances in his district.

J.M. Farias, owner of Austin Cheer Factory, said cheerleading aficionados would welcome the law. Cheering competitions, he said, penalize for suggestive movements or any vulgarity.

"Any coaches that are good won't put that in their routines," he said. And, most girls cheering on Friday nights were trained by professionals who know better, he said.

"I don't think this law would really shake the industry at all. In fact, it would give parents a better feeling, mostly dads and boyfriends, too," Farias said.

Although cheerleaders must meet the same no-pass, no-play academic requirements of athletes, cheerleading is not a competition sanctioned by the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of Texas high school sports.

The UIL also does not have performance regulations for squads who cheer for their teams at state championships, said Athletic Coordinator Peter Contreras.

"I think it should have been cut out a long time ago," Edwards said. "It surely needs to be toned down."

So much for entertainment on Friday night football games? I guess they don't have better things to do in Texas than be morality police. What is next cheerleaders must wear Victorian dresses to hide all flesh?

Wow.  What is with Texas anyway?  Texas INVENTED hot cheerleaders, for cryin' out loud!!  Can you say, "Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders"?!?

Dry counties and tons of drunk driving, anti-cheerleader bills and more per capita strip clubs and X-rated video stores than anyplace I've seen in Evil Yankee Land... this is the most schizophrenic state EVER.  It is like a chastity belt with a strap-on.

Is that why it is so fun here?

"Under Edwards' bill, if a school district knowingly permits such a performance, funds from the state would be reduced in an amount to be determined by the education commissioner."

Brilliant, just what Texas schools need.  There are entire schools without a student breaking 1100 on the SAT, so let's make them more stupider because somebody's butt jiggled.

The next step would be to form a panel to determine what is "sexually suggestive". What are they going to do, sit around and watch pornos all day to see if one of the cheerleaders is moving like a porn star?

I can just see it now, a bunch of do-gooders hanging around a TV in some back room scribbling notes to each other.  "Ooohh, ooohh, did you see that, she was breathing, just like that porn star. From now on breathing will be on the 'sexually suggestive' list!"

From my experience, the ones who scream the loudest about something are usually the ones you need to be the most wary of when it comes to that particular behavior.

Rep. Al Edwards, D-Houston, a firm supporter of all bleeding heart liberal socialist agendas who never met a government program he didn't like, or a facet of our lives he didn't think the government could do better than we can.

Kinda reminds me of Tipper Gore and her play for control of the entertainment industry. Interesting that no one talked much about that when Alby G. was running for pres. And even more interesting that the very artists she was trying to control were the same ones banding together to support her hubby's election bid.

Nothing like a little more gubmint control of our lives. After all, it is the socialist way, and socialism works soooooo well. rolleyes

I'da thunk he was a right-wing, Deity handbook-thumping, fascist, republican theocrat. Attempting to impose his morals on the rest of us through the legislative process. :barf:

Isn't having hot chicks in short skirts jumping around in front of the crowd inherently sexually suggestive?  Maybe they should require all school football teams to use shotgun only so as to prevent the quarterback and center from assuming a homosexually suggestive pose.

I guess you guys better watch out for the left wing, God hating secular huminist, democrat commies also.  Like the liberal/progressive wing of our government doesn't try to ram its morals or lack thereof down our throats.

Sounds like this legislator needs to take a cold shower.

This is why I love "legislative gridlock." The less laws passed, the better.

I'm all for restrictions on Cheerleading for the purposes of public decency. I thin Cheerleaders should at minimum wear a thong and pasties. Cheesy

Y'know, I love Texas.  People in California often wanted me to be embarrassed about being from here and I always blew them off.  Occasionally, though, someone associated with Texas does something so incredibly boneheaded that I can only shake my head.
Legislating morality is just a bad idea, and doomed to failure.

The borders are nearly non-existent, we're being over run with illegals choking the hospital and schools and welfare offices and prisons, and this chucklehead is worried about some cheerleaders?  Is he off his meds or irretrievably delusional or what?  He needs to be removed from office.

Apparently in Austin they are not aware that suggestive dancing is protected by the First Amendment.  That precedent comes, of course, from a case in Indiana.  My state . . . *sigh*

Then out to a topless bar for a lap dance. Wink

Idiotic legislation isnt a left-right issue. The sad fact is that it is a trait common to politicians of all stripes. They want to be in charge so they can controll people, and so they do. Basically anyone who wants to be a politician is fundamentally a poor choice for the job simply because they are seeking it.

I guess I'll just be contrary.
We are not talking about the Cowboys' cheerleaders, exotic dancers(ref."lap dance" from above),or adults.
What is in question is the promotion of sexuality of 14-18 year old high school girls. It seems to me that under different circumstances the fact that adult males-who could be the father of the girls in question-taking pleasure in the "sexually suggestive" performances would be labeled perverts & promotors of kiddie porn.

Now,I'm looking at this through my 35 year old eyes.If I were 19-20 I'm sure my opinion might be a bit different.

& if you want to flame me,please, don't forget the good BBQ sauce.

You know, every potentially naughty thing on Earth doesn't need to have a STATE LAW made to address it.  rolleyes

There are plenty of avenues for the parents to make their local school behave itself.

If it happens it will eliminate one more aspect of the parents' ability to control their children's education at the local level by ripping away their control over that aspect of their child's life and handing it over to the state. This helps the parents how?

Riiight.  I'm sure a vaguely-worded state law will get rid of rampant booty-shaking.  Since they are so effective at eliminating poverty, crime, illegal drugs, and so forth.  rolleyes

I was trying to imply that if enough people agreed that that was one of the avenues they could take.Assuming that I meant that .gov intervention would be the best thing would be incorrect.I was saying that that's one avenue.

The law doesn't have to be vague either. If I'd been asked(Smiley & I'm shocked that I haven't been.rolleyes)I'd put every student enrolled in public schools in uniform.Shirt & slacks-boys & girls-nothing else.No extra curricular sports either.Gym class through grade twelve.Booty shaking problem solved.

Let kids learn their boundries from their parents.

Ya know, the rest of the world seems to do sports without cheerleaders just fine.

Those of you lamenting the sad state of eductational budgets might want to consider whether the money spent on teaching high school girls to wiggle their butts and buying the clothes for this activity might not be best spent on something more educational.

Industry?

In the grand scheme of teen sexuality and morality, I doubt that cheerleading stands as a leading influencer of behavior.
