Title: Paging Viking
Post by: Hawkmoon on April 22, 2017, 06:27:44 PM
As someone a bit closer to the scene than we Amerricans, what's your view regarding the possible end of the Icelandic language?

I know the Icelanders have been sort of like the French in terms of trying to maintain their language. I recall a few years ago there was a huge uproar over a young woman whose name wasn't derived in the traditional way. ( https://www.yahoo.com/news/icelandic-girl-fights-her-own-name-074758814.html )

Apparently she won:

Are the traditionalists losing out to (GASP!) English?

Not until they accept names like Dweezil, Moon Unit, and Travon.

Not really. And Iceland historically was home to Vikings, so it seemed logical to consult a guy who goes by "Viking." I know Sweden isn't Iceland, but they are both Scandanavian.

Well, both Iceland and Greenland are closer to Vikingland than Terryland and probably Hawkmoonland, too.

Terry runs and hides even though somebody had to say it and he drew the short straw.

I believe Iceland is some how connected to Denmark, obviously not physically.

Greenland is politically connected to Denmark, I don't think Iceland is.

I was really surprised to discover that Greenland is so close to Canadaland.  Supposedly only 10 miles away at one point.  Parked that fact amongst my trivia neurons.

Used to be an all-you-could-eat smorgasbord (SP?) restaurant around here which advertised that you could eat like a Norse there.

Hated that ad.
