I am ashamed. I scored a miserable 5.
I got a 5, and I'm pretty pleased with myself as none of those were guesses.  (Or at least not wild guesses.  The Arisaka looked like an Arisaka and I was pretty sure it wasn't the 99)

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

6.  Ashamed.  Lessee, now.  Glasses scratched...  Nah.  Screen at wrong angle... Nope.  Ummmm....

Just 6.  C-minus?  Hope I make it up in the midterms.

8/9, although admittedly several were educated guesses.  Missed the Lebel.

I guess those hours and hours watching Forgotten Weapons finally paid off.

Six. Got the wrong Ariska or it would have been seven. The Lebel and Ross I simply had no idea.

Yeah, me too, on the French Lebel.  Ticks me off 'cause there was a fairly recent article about them in the American Rifleman.

Snarl on me.

I'd'a been up there with the big boys if it weren't for that.  Next time there's a quiz I hope I can sit next to one of them.

I don't think anyone should be dinged for getting a French rifle wrong.

Actually, according to the "Rifleman" article, they were pretty much at the technical forefront with that rifle, its ammo (Balle D), and their grenade launcher for it.  Several nations copied the grenade launcher design, IIRC.  It allowed grenades to be fired with regular ball* ammunition.  The grenades had holes through them for the bullet to pass through, simultaneously setting off the timing charge.

And, subject to correction, I think they were the first to use smokeless powder in their regular issue ammunition.

I could be persuaded to get off the couch and go dig out that article, but you have to buy me lunch first.

*Note for new readers:  "Ball" ammunition in militarese does not mean a literal round ball, but rather, simply a full-metal-jacketed (FMJ) regular elongated bullet. Go figure.

I don't follow it, but I always click to it when I come across it in a search or whatever.  Very good.

Maybe they should make a jazzier search engine keyword title for it, like "Deadly Murderous Assault Guns and Efficient Killing Machines Of The Past Trump Even Older Less Lethal Weapons and Motorcycles." :D

:D, really.

I couldn't squeeze "Health Foods" in there, hard as I tried.  But I did squish "Trump" into it sideways.

7 - the Lebel and Ross were the two I got wrong too.  Not a clue, I think I heard about the Lebel once, never heard of the Ross

9/9...

Although I admit I was making educated guesses. Like the Arisaka being a 38... just because that was the earlier one, and it was a WWI quiz. I can always recognize an Arisaka, but I don't really know the different types from bupkis. There's an old one, a new one, and the takedown one, one was in 7.7, and then there's a 6.something one too, and some have the weird monopod and aircraft leading legs on the sights, but I can't ever remember which. Also, there's a dustcover over the bolt almost nobody ever has, because the Japanese would routinely discard it because it rattled.

And other things like "Mannlicher is always that one with the funny looking magazine."

I remembered the Ross because of the whole, "put the bolt in backwards it'll blow into your skull"-thing (grossly overstated IIRC) but it was enough to make me remember the very smooth featureless rear reciever that looked almost semi-auto-ish...

Other things helped me too, like being able to discard a multiple choice answer because it sounded like it was made up, or one of the choices I knew what it looked like and it wasn't that rifle.

I promise not to duck.

Anybody here not follow Forgotten Weapons?

Another good one is C&Rsenal.

They don't put out episodes nearly as often as Forgotten Weapons does, but when they do put one out it's usually 40-60 minutes and delves deep into the backstory behind the guns. Right now they're pretty much focusing exclusively on WWI guns.

Next question is...

How many of the rifles in that quiz have you fired?

I'm 9 for 9 there, too.

"Other things helped me too, like being able to discard a multiple choice answer because it sounded like it was made up"

As far as I can tell, all of the choices are actual rifles.

The one most out in left field is the Jezail, which is a type of middle eastern muzzleloader.
