Obama acknowledges he's considering run for president in 2008
Last Updated 10/22/2006 11:45:21 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Barack Obama acknowledged Sunday he was considering a run for president in 2008, backing off previous statements that he would not do so.

The Illinois Democrat said he could no longer stand by the statements he made after his 2004 election and earlier this year that he would serve a full six-year term in Congress. He said he would not make a decision until after the Nov. 7 elections.

"That was how I was thinking at that time," said Obama, when asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" about his previous statements.

"Given the response I've been getting the last several months, I have thought about the possibility" although not with any seriousness or depth, he said. "My focus is on '06. ... After November 7, I'll sit down and consider it."

Obama was largely unknown outside Illinois when he burst onto the national scene with a widely acclaimed address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

In recent weeks, his political stock has been rising as a potentially viable centrist candidate for president in 2008 after former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner announced earlier this month that he was bowing out of the race.

In a recent issue of Time magazine, Obama's face fills the cover next to the headline, "Why Barack Obama Could Be The Next President." He is currently on a tour promoting his latest book, "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream."

On Sunday, Obama dismissed notions that he might not be ready to run for president because of his limited experience in national politics. He agreed the job requires a "certain soberness and seriousness" and "can't be something you pursue on the basis of vanity and ambition."

"I'm not sure anyone is ready to be president before they're president," Obama said. "I trust the judgment of the American people.

"We have a long and vigorous process. Should I decide to run, if I ever decide to, I'll be confident that I'll be run through the paces pretty well," Obama said.

1) Senators never get elected President.  I can't remember the last one who did.
2) Obama doesnt have the grass roots support.
3) Obama would be going against the Clinton machine for money, a losing proposition.

But I could see him on the ticket with Hilary.  And I could see that ticket going down in flames in the national election.

He hasn't got a chance even if he could win the Demo nomination:

He's got two strikes against him right out of the gate...

1. The US still isn't ready for a Black President regardless of what the lame stream media and all the ate up with political correctness weenies want to believe.

2. His name - Obama - billy joe bubba and the rest of the unwashed, illiterate and/or apathetic  masses who actually bother to vote but don't think much about it until about 30 seconds before they make their mark will see Obama on the ballot and wonder why the guy responsible for blowing up the Twin Towers is running for president.

Still - I'd like to see him run - it'd put the big hurt on Hillary and though I imagine she'd beat him in the end if he and she ended up on the same ticket - her for Pres him for VP - it'd almost guarantee at least another 4 years of rule by the lesser of two evils - errrr - uhhh - republicans that is.

Oh God, I didn't want to bring it up, but since someone else did--when I read this thread title quickly I thought, "Osama's running for President?  This should be good for a laugh and a forward" Smiley

Obama can't possibly win.  He's simply too liberal.  America doesn't want socialism.  Just ask John Kerry.

If the democrats want to win the presidency they need to run someone moderate like Joe Lieberman.  But of course the Democrats want nothing to do with anyone like Joe Lieberman.

Oh well...

I saw him on one of the "inside the beltway" shows recently; mom's white & American, dad's Nigerian.  He is very articulate, a fresh face, and not at all afraid to be who he is on camera.  Attractive to the masses, many of whom vote for the "cutest". rolleyes

http://www.ontheissues.org/Domestic/Barack_Obama_Gun_Control.htm

Principles that Obama supports on gun issues:
Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.
Increase state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.
Require manufacturers to provide child-safety locks with firearms.

Retailers are already required to provide locks with guns.

But those things will certainly solve all the gun crime in this country.  Right??
