Title: Reinstall complete
Post by: RevDisk on November 03, 2016, 09:06:52 AM
If things get weird, have patience.

Post on FB APS group if you can't reach the server.

Post preview will be funky until I get the next patch corrected.

All is going well. Proof is a photo of me working on APS server, showing the smooth upgrade process:

Excellent. Thanks for the progress update.

"Kill it with fire" is generally a recognized tactic, suitable for most occasions.

Good news: Wasn't my fault.    =D

Bad news: A Wordpress instance on same server was compromised. Which is common, every linux hack I've seen in the last year had been a WordPress compromise. Usually crap plugins, which is most of them. Once the guy got in, he seeded html injection mines everywhere.

The Ugly: I half cleaned APS, but I never trust 'cleaning'. Gonna nuke it from orbit, only way to be sure. The DB does look fine, though I'll be forcing a password change because again, overkill is kinda my thing. Plus we haven't done it to date, so folks might be using passwords compromised by any of the megacorp compromises of the last few years.

While we're at it, might be time to jump to SMF 2.x. 1.1.x is still maintained and looks like it will be for a while.

On the plus side, we're up to the latest version of 1.1.21.   =D

I'll let folks know when I'll be taking down APS for the reinstall. Probably sometime this weekend. Scheduling will be strictly controlled by multiple factors. Such as strategic Yuengling reserve stock levels or whatnot.

Title: Re: Doing upgrades
Post by: Ben on November 04, 2016, 09:50:49 AM
Thanks Rev!

I completely agree with your nuke strategy.

One thing on the password changes. This may have been fixed with the current upgrades, or will be fixed after the nuke, but for quite a while I was getting PMs from people who had tried to change their passwords and ended up getting locked out. They were only able to contact me from devices like their phones where they were still logged in.

The only fix I had was to reset the password myself with a temp, email that to them, then they would log in with that and would then be able to change their password with no problem. I think all these instances occurred with users who signed on back before we had the minimum password security thing and they were attempting to upgrade their passwords (e.g., old password was "aps" and they were changing it to A$^iP17S).

Anyway, don't wanna cause a headache for you and Nick, but I wanted to give you a heads up that there has/had been a password reset problem. Like I said it may have been fixed with upgrades as it has been months since I got a password problem PM.

If there's a particular procedure you want people to use for the password change, you might want to outline it in this thread.

Yeah, I sorted out more of the bad code. I was intending on just letting it go until the blow out of all existing code, but yanno. Geeks gotta geek.

I do happen to know the location of the Yuengling beer caves, been there many times. The continuous source of all strategic Yuengling reserves since 1829. Virtually unlimited source of good but still economic beer in a diverse set of flavors. Including their limited seasonal releases. It's quite nice, actually. Especially to be able to drive straight to the factory to buy some cases.

I think you mean "rending," rather than "rendering."

Common mistake.

rendered, rendering
 a :   to melt down <render suet>; also :   to extract by melting <render lard>

b :   to treat so as to convert into industrial fats and oils or fertilizer

rend
1 :  to tear (something) into pieces with force or violence

(Usually in anger or maybe frustration, as in "rend one's garments and gnash one's teeth." )

Just feeling pissanty tonight because I've got to change all those clocks.  Normally I don't correct others unless I'm asked.

Personally, I'm going the sackcloth and ashes route.

I had a wife once who used to ask me to correct her.

Then she'd blow her top when I corrected her.

Wife.3 was a serious upgrade from Wife.1 and Wife.2

May I assume you took the suggestion to wait until after the election to make the changes?

I, among others, I am sure, use the site a lot as a "news tickler" about subjects and then go to the citations to check them out.  Would miss that if the site went down before or during the election... which might actually last until December.

So... that was fun.

Round 1:
Attempted to upgrade to SMF 2.x. It didn't go well.
Internet at home started cutting out and then died. Which has never happened previously except for severe storms.
Went into work.
Undid the SMF 2.x install, reinstalled 1.1.21. Re-enabled certain add-on packages (anti-spam).

Round 2:
Icons fixed.
Didn't remember the exact order of the boards. So... I just put the boards in an order that kinda sorta made sense, kinda sorta random. Good enough for government work.
Set file permissions to more secure settings. Previously some were 777, which was very bad.

Think that's everything. Going home, today sucked.

Lemme know if anything else is hinky.

Babylon is outdated, from when forum was first installed. I'm debating whether to fix the theme or mass migrate everyone.

I'll give it a try.

Don't sweat it.  I can be patient on a fix, if a theme change doesn't do it.

BTW, the look and layout page says 3000+ people are using Babylon, 300 some odd are using "Forum or Board Default" (which actually looks OK), and no one is using Manas or whatever the other one is.

Thanks, Rev.

I had at one point mirrored the software on a VM, and had all kinds of difficulty getting it to upgrade.

I probably could have sorted it, but it would have taken a lot of time, which I didn't ever seem to have.  I appreciate you dealing with this.

I did the same thing. Problem is, neither of our VMs acts like the current hosting provider. With only FTP access and indirect SQL access, it's significantly harder. The patches went fine, but the upgrade to SMF 2.x would not work. Whenever we want to go down that path, we're going to have to kick the ball to the hosting people.
