Australian Farmers Told to Dynamite Rabbits
« on: February 10, 2010, 05:19:06 PM »
I thought this was funny (at least the way Fox reported it).  We have way to many rabbits, so please blow up as many as you can.     Why not shoot a few?  Oh, wait, they have nothing to shoot them with.  =(

(The Adelaide Advertiser) -- Australian farmers are being urged by authorities to use poison gas and even ammonium nitrate explosive to blow up rabbits, as biological controls fail, The Adelaide Advertiser reported in its Thursday edition.

A warning issued to farmers by the South Australian Environment Department urges them to "overcome the rabbit's tremendous breeding potential" by traditional means such as bulldozers, poison baits, fumigation, dogs and even explosives.

"Explosives are an alternative for follow up control . . . accreditation and training is mandatory," the information bulletin issued by the Arid Lands Natural Resources Management Board (ALNRMB) states.

Invasive animals expert Professor Tony Peacock said the advice reflected the fact that authorities and farmers were resorting to more unusual techniques while scientists searched for the next biological control for the pest.

"Calicivirus is not as effective as it was and the people that have the least problem are those who also destroyed warrens so the rabbits didn't come back," he said.

i was under the impression that while it was a pain in the bottem to purchase/learn and transport firearms, it is actually possible to get long guns in rural areas for hunting/sporting/farming related purposes.

They can get them for target shooting as well. They just have quite a bit of regulations to get past. I'd say that they are generally better off than the UK, NYC, Chicago, but it ain't exactly unregulated no more. Used to be in atleast two states that you could buy long guns without licenses, registration or anything. They sold huge number of SKS rifles straight from shipping containers at farmer's markets, just show ID to prove you're 18 and off you go, which obviously changed after Port Arthur...

Nah, Mexico. Good news is the government will supply all the fancy weapons and explosives we want. And pay us a bounty for each one.

Now it's just a matter of time before the Youtube video involving a carrot sitting atop 20lbs of Tannerite. Sure you could just shoot the rabbit with the gun you're going to shoot the Tannerite with, but that is not good TV. Maybe the Sea Shepherd gang can start a land war to save the bunnies since seamanship isn't their best game.

Sad part is, rabbits are not indigenous to Australia, they were brought there by the Europeans in the late 1700's

Rifles are definetly legal in Australia.  I'm sure you've got to jump through some hoops, but you can own firearms in AU.  I'm not sure on the exact restrictions, but I know that those Remington r-15 rifles are legal in AU, meaning AR15 mags must be legal too, at least in some capacity.
