  • I spent a week in that town one night....
For lack of a better place to put this, I choose politics, since it touches on that:

Unsustainable debt, nations that are trying to kick the can down the road.  Well, at some point you run out of road.  And with money flying out of France, the french bankers are all making "Not me" faces, and looking to stiff the Germans when the EU zone collapses.    Maybe the Mayans are going to be right after all.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Well, let's ask them, I think there are some Mayans outside doing some landscaping...

The guy doesn't have much of a track record for accurate predictions.  But this time he may just be right about the outcome.  Don't know about the timeline, though.  We might go a little longer before the final crash and burn.

I can easily see the EU and the Euro collapsing, but I don't know about seeing that cascade into world collapse.

Depends on what you mean by collapse, doesn't it? I can see global Great Depression. I have trouble seeing Mad Max.

If financial markets seize up completely for a bit, then things get real "interesting", in the Chinese-curse sort of way.  Most agri-business runs on credit.  Food availability, and consequently pricing, could take an excursion.  Just sayin'.

Global depression-------that's pretty much what I was thinking.  "Mad Max" would require a war, I would think.  A BIG one.

The same could be said for the energy component of the economy- how do we get fuel to power plants, trains, trucks, ships without a stabile medium of exchange?
We would have all of the infrastructure for agriculture and industry, but wouldn't have a way to keep it working. It become a chicken or egg problem with financing everything and getting it up and running and having the commerce to back a fiat currency to make it all run.

Well, the President could order the Army into the streets, I suppose, but I don't know if we can make Monsanto deliver seeds or Shell deliver tractor fuel at bayonet-point.
