Poll: What's a Hoosier?
« on: March 26, 2011, 01:26:06 AM »
It appears there is a regional difference in the application of this term. Or is there? Please state your place of origin and/or current residence, and what this term means to you.

http://www.indiana.edu/~librcsd/internet/extra/hoosier.html

I have lived mostly in the St. Louis region since childhood, which (they say) is the one part of the country where "hoosier" is not a proper noun, but a term of derision without reference to geography. I first heard it used this way, but soon learned its correct meaning.

In Wisconsin, Hoosier is a citizen of Indiana. Down here in AL, a Hoosier is a "flatlander", which is also what Wisconsinites call those from IL. Of course, down here, Wisconsinites are "flatlanders", too. ;)

I was born and grew up in Indiana.....

Born and grew up in Nevada, currently in Oregon.  "Hoosier" means "citizen of Indiana" to me, but only because I read Tamara's blog.

Otherwise, it probably wouldn't mean much to me. Intellectually, I'd still understand it had something to do with Indiana, but I wouldn't automatically make that connection.  Might take a few seconds for my synapses to reach that point.

I think this is the first time I've heard it as a reference to "rural person of low character or small means" or a tire, though. 'Round these parts, "rural person of low character or small means" are usually referred to as hicks or rednecks, or occasionally, hillbillies.

I haven't grown up yet.

But "Hoosier" means either a citizen of Indiana or one who has no idea how to drive an automobile (same thing, isn't it?).

A small portion of my youth was spent at Bass Lake, Indiana, which was too small to have its own Western Auto store so folks had to travel to Hamlet in order to buy their drivers license.  No test - just lay your money down and you got a license.  How quickly depended on how fast the guy behind the counter could hunt and peck to type in your name.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

They keep making this eternal vigilance thing harder and harder.  Protecting the 2nd amendment is like playing PACMAN - there's no pause button so you can go to the bathroom.

I was born a Buckeye, so "Hoosier" means "Indiana Person" to me.

Brand of tire.
"I gots some new 255-50-16 Hoosiers for the Nova"

Self imposed term of endearment for Indiana residents or natives.
"I'm a Hoosier.  Are you a Hoosier?"

Pejorative towards residents of indiana, usually accompanied by a colorful adjective, often shortened to F.I.P. (add adjective to doggy daddy's definition) pronounced "fip".
"Dag blammed Hoosiers clogging up Friday afternoon traffic again"
or
"Sorry I'm late, I got caught behind a gaggle of fips at the Burrito stand."

I have relatives in Wisconsin and that is NOT what they call people from IL =D  I don't think Art's relatives would appreciate what they DO call them, however.

I lived in Wisconsin for 51 years, and we called them "flatlanders", but more often "FIBS".

This has been my experience as well.  Certain less refined individuals in many parts of the country are called "hillbillies," however St. Louisans seem to have substituted the term hoosier.

I guess hillbilly hits a little too close to home.   :P

Many different theories:

1.  People who worked for Samuel Huzier in Indiana before statehood.

2.  "Whose ear?"

3.  "Who's there?"

4.  Southern term to describe banjos, which still survives in Missouri.
I do not smoke pot, wear Wookie suits, live in my mom's basement, collect unemployment checks or eat Cheetoes, therefore I am not a Ron Paul voter.
