Title: "97% of scientists agree" (Cook et al 2013) deconstruction.
Post by: Brad Johnson on June 24, 2015, 12:53:04 PM
Actually more a total humiliation.

I know the study results have been grossly misquoted. I had no idea how piss-poor the original data analysis was. Is there a way to formally submit stuff like this for scholarly discreditation?

Reminds me of the Bellesiles flap:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arming_America

Especially the section on "Scrutiny" and those following.

Also reminds me of the Ward Churchill flap:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ward_Churchill

Especially the section on "Research Misconduct Investigation":

Quote
On May 16, 2006 the University released their findings; the Investigative Committee agreed unanimously that Churchill had engaged in "serious research misconduct", including falsification, fabrication and plagiarism. The faculty committees at Colorado University unanimously found Churchill guilty of fabrication and falsification in two of his works that mentioned smallpox.

I'm sure others around here can find more reminders.

Perhaps we need to start reminding people that there was a time when the scientific consensus held that:

* The earth was flat

* The sun and the planets revolved around the earth

* ...

* Opening a sick person's veins and bleeding them to "release the bad humors" was legitimate medical treatment

* Lead paint on your face was good for the complexion

* Tobacco was good for you

* And Pluto was a planet.

Don't believe your lying eyes.

The scientific consensus is gender and race are only social constructs.

* Tobacco was good for you

Given the life expectancy of the time, that may have not been as bad as you think.

I'm still trying to punnify Uranus and its moons... especially Puck.

Uranus... Moon(ing)...  Puck(er)...

Nap time for me anyhow.
