Some interesting movies coming out
« on: April 15, 2009, 03:26:08 AM »
I don't usually pay much attention to these things, but a few have caught my interest recently.

"Public enemies" with Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. Looks to have a lot of good gun porn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWof6CovHxI&feature=channel

"Terminator: Salvation" with Christian Bale. I'm pretty indifferent to the series as a whole, but this looks a little different. The gritty feel of the first with the cool FX of the second two. And the use of NIN's "The day the whole world went away" in the trailer sold me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcg5t0mT8V4&feature=related

"Star Trek" I've always dislike Trek, but this looks like it may change my opinion. We'll see. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdneFmLn0Sg&feature=related

Anything you're looking forward to?

I can't friggin wait for the new Terminator.  FINALLY they get to the Future War.  =D

Star Trek, on the other hand... I honestly say that, as a closet Trek-nerd, I am not looking forward to it in the slightest.  From the trailers I've seen, the only two things they got to look remotely right are young Spock and the villain.  Everything else is superturboexplosivesmoothsurfaceblueandwhiteshinyclean21stcentury BS.  I'm a Simon Pegg fan, and I cannot believe that someone would make such a mistake as to cast him as Scotty.

I'm also patiently awaiting Sin City 2 and 3, though.  Keep the look the exact same as the first one, just different stories and characters, and I won't have any beef with it.

Dion: I hear ya, but I can't stand Trek as it usually is, so for me the change is a positive. :)

I had no idea they were doing sequels to Sin City. I've seen parts of that but I really should watch the whole thing.

I'm looking forward to the new Star Trek movie....from what I'm hearing, JJ Abrams may breathe some new life into the franchise...and help undo the sins of the prior management....

I didn't like the last Terminator movie....seemed tired & cliche'd...like the Star Trek series had been. But Bale usually does good stuff, so I might give it a try....

Johnny Depp in anything makes me nervous....esp. as someone with historical reputation....I'll wait & see on this one....

As long as Bale channels his anger against the machines, he'll be okay.  :)

I liked the 3rd movie, but the older John Connor didn't seem like much of a leader to me.  I guess this one ought to be better.

+1 to T3 being recycled cliches.  Watching a preview for this new T4... it's got the potential for Blade-Runner style existentialism in it along with gritty 21st century scifi warfare.  I dig, so far.

Johnny Depp?  I like him.  Plays really colorful characters.  Good escapism, whether being a demon barber or pirate captain.

i wanna see the new terminator too. i actually havn't seen the others (bits and peices but never the whole movies) but i follow the tv show pretty closely. i like the concept of the Terminator. i just can't stand listining to Arnie talk, and i have this thing about watching movies (or reading books) in order. which means i'm gonna have to suck it up and watch Arnie, but i am procrastinating.

I can't wait for Sin City. i LOVED the style of the first one so much. it was total eye candy, but unlike most of the eye candy movies, it actually had a good story.

i am sorta intrested in the star trek and dad actually wants to see it. he's not a star trek guy at all but he actually does want to see this one.

What's the Brad Pitt movie, "Dirty Bastards" or something like that?

Machine guns and dead Nazis=>all the necessary elements for a good movie. =D

So is it an Xmen movie, or just about Wolverine? Haven't seen any previews for it. Is the trailer out yet?

X-Men Origins : Wolverine (2009) - Trailer #1
X-Men Origins : Wolverine (2009) - Trailer #2
There you go. It's mostly about Wolverine, but it shows some other famous faces too.

As for Public Enemies, it is a Mann film, so yeah it will have plenty of gun porn.

I heard T4 is shooting for a pg13 rating.. meh.  I have a feeling it will be a mediocre action film, entertaining, but not "good" like T2.

Public Enemies looks good... anyone else think christian bale is severely overrated?

What do you mean "good?" It was ok I guess. The first one was the best story-wise, but crappy FX. The 2nd had great FX but was pretty "meh." Never saw the 3rd, looked like more of the same.

Inglourious Basterds, and yeah, it does look pretty good.  It's a Tarantino flick, BTW.

Reasons T4 will probably not be good:

1. A complete lack of Summer Glau.
2. A complete lack of Arnie.
3. John Connor is supposed to be this uber-leader. The problem with this stuff is that it's difficult to show without disappointing.

Most of my May movie list is in this thread.

Wolverine - Wife and I both are excited for this one.

Star Trek - Same.

Angels & Demons - Sequel to The Da Vinci Code.  Still haven't seen that one. All wife here.

Terminator 4 - Me here. Not hugely excited, but I figure I've already seen the rest... besides, I'm interested to see what Bale does.

Sadly, it appears there will never be anymore Summer Glau. Looks like the season finale was also the series finale. Too bad -- it had its ups and downs, and sometimes it seemed a little 90210-ish with the teenage relationships stuff, but it started getting a lot better this season, especially the last few episodes with the introduction of the "rebel" terminators.

I wish they could have done more with that.  I'd like to know what was going on, what their motivation was, etc.

Oddly enough my wife loathes that whole series. But I think we can all be relieved Tom Hanks isn't rocking that creepy pedo-haircut he had in the first one.

Yeah, they dropped the Page Boy pretty quick... Mrs. Dual has stated on more than one occasion she'd leave me for Tom Hanks, he was the one celeb on her "list" and even she was rather offput by his hair in the movie.

Me, I'm waiting for "The Crying Game II: Battle of the Bulge" to come out.
I promise not to duck.

Really, Tom Hanks? I'd point out she has bad taste in men, but it somehow seems redundant.....

I won't argue it.  =D

I'm a modest fan of his, at least from Saving Private Ryan, if nothing else. Plus the modicum of respect I feel towards any mega-star who manages to be a decent "normal" person in their life, rather than the usual tabaloid train-wreck.

I think it goes back to the Meg Ryan romantic comedies he's been in those are some of her favorites. I keep getting compared to romantic moments, characters in fiction and (big surprise!) falling short. He's just the pinnacle of the genera, I guess.

I suppose if I ever get tired of our marriage, I'll just open my mouth and compare her to Meg Ryan.  ;/ But I won't. Not fair to my four little girls.
