Tom Barrett, Milwaukee's very anti-gun mayor, was beaten today with a metal pipe. He sustained head injuries and a fractured hand.

Barrett and family members were leaving the State Fair when he saw a man in his twenties arguing/fighting with a woman. Barrett tried to intervene, and threatened to call 911. An altercation ensued, and Barrett broke his hand trying to punch the man. He was beaten in the head and torso with a metal pipe.

Some suggestions to Hizzoner:

1. You might want to consider not intervening in a domestic dispute. Even young cops with muscles and training are cautious when it comes to domestic disturbance calls.

2. You might also want to reconsider your opposition to a shall-issue concealed carry law. As you have painfully learned, not everyone has rock-hard fists. Hands break. Guns usually don't.

3. A good bluff beats 911. A fist beats a good bluff. A metal pipe beats a fist. A gun beats a metal pipe. You didn't have a gun. You got beat. Are you detecting a pattern here?

damn... who DOES one cheer for in a case like this?

Like the story I heard earlier, where thieves found child porn on a stolen comp, so they took it to the police...

So, I guess they can look forward to pipe-control legislation soon.

Fortunately, I've just never had an urge to visit a state known primarily for cheese and bad beer.

Neither obviously, laugh at both of them and cheer for the irony of the situation.

I'm not saying the tyrannt should have been beaten with a pipe. But, I'm glad he didn't weasel out of the situation he created by carrying himself or hiring private security. He was at least enough of a man to take it like the rest of the citizens he viciously and sadistically oppresses every day. Sure, the guy probably morally deserved a pipe beating, but that still doesn't make it right. I hope the chick beater goes away for some time, and I hope the mayor rethinks his position.

On this particular day he opted not to have his usual security detail with him. When they're with him, he has an officer in his car and another unmarked squad following.

I don't know if he has the same car as the previous mayor, but that car had two drop-down compartments in the roof, each containing a loaded M16A2. A friend of mine was the sales rep whose company did the installation of the compartments and supplied the M16's.

Although odds are the guy fighting with the woman was the aggressor, we really don't know for sure what was going on . . . which is a really good reason to stay out of domestic squabbles between strangers unless you're a sworn LEO.

Maybe I'm reading too much into the snippet posted, but Hizzoner seems to be one of those people overly impressed with his own "a-thor-i-tay" and found out that others are much less impressed with it than he is.

But when scumbag meets scumbag and fisticuffs ensue, it's a little enjoyable to just sit back and enjoy the show.

It seems to me that Milwaukee and Wisconsin in general is only ever in the news for this type of oddity. Cannibalistic serial killers, the recent case of an unfaithful man's wife and two lovers ambushing him and using Crazy Glue on his genitals, the mayor getting beaten by a pipe-weilding thug in a nearby suburb...

I swear, there's nothing you can do some days but grin and Barrett.

Wait... What? Why would a mayor's guards need two M16A2's? Dude, I know it's not the best area, but gods, that sounds like overkill for a protecting a mayor.

Alot of Mayors are protected by the city police. Alot of police departments buy surplus A2's from the .mil. It would stand to reason, then, that the weapons are probably standard issue for the department at some level. Just a guess.

True enough. Before the previous mayor, John Norquist, took office, though, there were 18 gun stores in Milwaukee. During his term in office he managed to zone all of them out of existence. Both Norquist and Mayor Barrett have lobbied for all sorts of gun control laws to control violent crime.

How are those laws against assault workin' for ya, Mayor Barrett?

Back in the days when MLK speeches were being punctuated by riots, the Chicago Police Department acquired what's been described as a "boxcar" full of military surplus weapons. (I heard this from two different police sources, a neighbor and an uncle.) This was done quietly, and AFAIK the weapons were never passed out in large numbers, but it wouldn't surprise me if SWAT and executive protection details got some of this stuff. The rest is probably in the basement of CPD HQ.

These same people are always telling us we shouldn't take the law into our own hands and simply call the police who will protect us. I guess he should have listened to himself.

Best bet is to call 911 before intervening in such a situation. If there is a crime going on, its a police matter.

I like the irony of the situation though. He is personally responsible for helping the thug element prey on the rest of us and one of his thug buddies preys on him instead for a change.
