farmville
« on: December 10, 2009, 03:27:13 PM »
I'm just a middle aged guy who happened to figure out that the interent could be useful.  I'm not on facebook or myspace.  So I was surprised to hear people at work talk about Farmville.  It's a game you play on Facebook.  You own a pretend farm and grow things, sell them, earn points, etc.  Apparently it takes advantage of the social networking part of the net.  It is extremely popular, people really get in to it.  My question is why?  What do people get out of it?  Is it fun, or....what?  I just don't get it.

I tried it a while back. It's like watching virtual paint dry.

i use facebook, but i make it a point to never use farmville because it takes all the cute, quaint things about farming and shoves it all together, disregarding things that are very important to farming, such as waking up early, long hours, heavy work, etc...

i guess it gives people the illusion of doing something, or maybe it's something to occupy them... hey, if they want to be occupied, go outside and make a farm and be productive...

The same could be said of any "non-productive" form of entertainment.  It's just a game. My wife plays it sometimes; like any other game, just a way to shut the brain off and relax for a few minutes. No (fun) games are realistic to the point of not disregarding things like waking up early, long hours, and heavy work. People play games to have fun and relax, that's about all there is to it.

I never play games on FB as a matter of principle...I already waste too much time on the intertubes.

My wife plays it constantly....I don't understand the attraction either.

IME, it's mind numbing, repetitious clicking that accomplishes nothing...but it's her time so whatever.

There's a particular type of "questing behavior" that people are prone to... these games, the mafia games, and a ton of other online games (World of Warcraft, etc) satisfy this particular itch.

Also it is a nice clear cut list of people I can safely ignore. ;)

Do they also have a game called "NewYork" where you can look at penthouse views and shop at stores on Fifth Avenue ?

IIRC there was a news item that the purveyors of "Farmville" were being sued over the shennanigans related to clicking for added points.  Something about getting signed up for products/services that the players didn't want or couldn't cancel.

For the players of Mafia Wars, Vampires, FarmVille and a handful of other Facebook games, the temptation of earning "virtual currency" by clicking on the various offers that popped up on the page was too much to pass up. Unfortunately, what these gamers didn't realize at the time was that the advancement of their virtual characters came at the expense of their own personal bank accounts.

Now, some are fighting back by filing a lawsuit against Facebook and Zynga, the maker of the games. The suit, which is seeking class action status, claims that some offers in the games prompted a series of unauthorized charges or triggered enrollments in programs without the user's knowledge. More than 100,000 people fell victim to these offers, losing more than $5 million, the lawsuit claims.

If only P.T. Barnum had kept quiet about fools and their money.

A coworker showed me this Farmville you speak of.  It reminds me of a game I indeed used to play years ago when I actually had time to play games.  The game was Caesar III and I greatly enjoyed it.  When watching this coworker harvest crops, I wondered how cool it would be if only a few legions from Caesar III could make a debut on Farmville and sack some crops.

I haven't seen Farmville, but it sounds like another one of those God's-eye-view sort of games, like the Sims.  Or the original Warcraft.  I hate those games, or for that matter any game that involves too many choices.  Risk, for example.  It's just way too much mental effort for a game.

But then, the only game I'm any good at is Balderdash.   ;/

This "Farmville" game should be 12 hours of staring over the hood of a tractor  ;)

Actually, I did some farming a few years back, and rather enjoyed it.

But it didn't pay very well, but at least I wasn't having to buy the diesel fuel  :O
