What does the Coast Guard do in landlocked states?
« on: February 09, 2021, 07:30:49 PM »
I was just reading a quote from a spokesperson for the 13th Coast Guard District, which covers Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.  Washington and Oregon I can see, but what the heck does the Coast Guard do in landlocked states in Idaho and Montana?

Any navigable waterway. Which if I remember correctly under Obama included the once every two or three years creek on the back 40 and the irrigation ditch across the highway.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Not knowing, but just guessing, I'd have thought the CG would have regulatory authority over all watercraft, including safety regulations and recording boat names and the like.

I have occasionally mentioned "the east coast of Colorado" and the Colorado Navy, referring to the USS Colorado (BB-45) display in Colorado University's Memorial Center in Boulder.  (Including the ship's bell.)

I hope nobody took me seriously.

USCG Customs inspection and CONNEX inspection/certification teams.  I've worked with a bunch of them, good folks.

We also have 10 or so USCG 110' cutters attached to US 5th fleet in Bahrain, and we used to have some USCG Port Security units in the Persian Gulf, but I think they went home circa 2012 or so.

The Coast Guard had a role in the D-Day invasion.  I'm not sure if they ever fired a shot, but were mainly involved in rescuing our guys from the water.

I'm against publishing personal edresses and phone numbers, but apparently it's OK for that site.

I vaguely recall that one of our famous movie actors skippered a vessel of the "Matchbox Fleet" and got a pretty substantial medal for his actions on D-Day.

Without compiling a reference work, I'm kind of amazed at how many of those old-time entertainment icons served in the military in WWII --even to the extent of actually pulling triggers and going bang.

^^^If I recall correctly, CG personnel drove many of the landing craft during the island-hopping campaign in the Pacific as well as D-day in WW II.

Coast guard also provided convoy ASW escort too. They manned small, under equipped ships in the North Atlantic against the U-boats.

Inter-service rivalry aside for a minute or two, I've got a healthy respect for a lot of the Coasties.  They often fly/sail into hurricane force storms to go pull people out of danger.  Rescue swimmers have courage by the bucket full.  And I believe they have several occupational specialties which could be considered "combat arms" in other services.  I knew a Coastie who served in the Middle East in what I would call a modern PBR.

You mean they build model submarines and dive them into a deep lake?

I think they can assist, but I believe it's mostly MSDs (Marine Safety Detachments). An MSD was next door to me when I was with Unky Sugar. While they did safety inspections, they also did accident investigation, emergency response, and the Cutter stationed there did maritime law enforcement. We used to work with them when we still had a plane to do stuff like oil spill and grounded vessel overflights since it was difficult for them to get a helo from Air Station Hollywood.

I know the Auxiliary does a lot of boater safety classes.

I'm waiting for a good answer as to why the Department of Transportation built an INTERSTATE HIGHWAY in Hawaii.

Unsure.  They've rocked up on my dad's boat a few times while we were fishing and were aholes about it.  This was in Lake Erie, if that helps.

I know the Auxiliary does a lot of boater safety classes.

Took my course from those guys.  8 weeks, don't remember what exactly it was called,  but we took the class preemptively when the state of Ohio was making noises about requiring a license, and my dad wanted to get in front of potential stupid new laws.

Those guys were really professional, and the class was absolutely worth taking, even after Ohio abandoned the license scheme.
