Paris Catacombs

I guess I was one of those, as per the article, "blissfully unaware". Not that they existed, but what they look like. Really hits home on how handling the dead has changed in the Western world.

From article:
Quote
the Paris catacombs are a complex series of interconnected tunnels and rooms that contain the bones of about six million people. Some of them are arranged to form little walls that wouldn’t look out of place in a Castlevania game, some are buried more traditionally, and some comprise the fully reanimated skeletons that stalk the corridors in search of wayward Parisians.

Now that's a church worthy of the Emperor.
