If you have crab phobia, try a crab cake first. Doesn't look like crab, but tastes like heaven.

"Crab cake is not substitute for fresh crab meat."

HOLY CRAP, I'VE SEEN THE LIGHT!

THANK YOU, CHARBY, FOR ALLOWING ME TO SEE THAT A POINT THAT I DIDN'T EVEN MAKE IS ACTUALLY INCORRECT!

I'M SO HUMBLED BY YOUR PERSPICACITY!

PLEASE ALLOW ME TO HAVE YOUR CHILDREN!!!

Look at my message to Laurent again, you wad.

I'm talking about ways of EASING HIM INTO eating crab, something he said that he won't do. I guessed that it's a matter of perception over the appearance of the crab. I may be wrong about that.

I NEVER suggested that crab cake is somehow a "substitute" for "fresh crab." (Speaking of which, do you actually know anyone who makes their crab cakes from rotted crap meat, as opposed to fresh? If so, you need to find a better restaurant.)

But, if it is, removing the negative connotation is a valid way of introducing someone to something that they don't think that they like based on the visual image.

Next time, READ my message, and understand it, BEFORE you weigh in.

Point to Mike.

I've gotten my wife to eat crab cakes.

She enjoyed them, but still won't eat crab legs.

That just leaves more for me.   grin

geez Mike, no you can't bear my children.

I have never really had what I call a great crab cake, maybe its the mix of spices or warmed up frozen crab.

I've all kinds of crab cakes from the crap from Long John Silvers, to fine dining to hand made.

I'm midwestern raised and it took me a while to try crab, I was aprehensive at look of the critter, but I finally did and haven't though twice about it. Kind of surprising since eating chicken stomachs, beef tongues and lamb nuts are pretty normal here.

"warmed up frozen crab."

You do realize that very likely EVERY Alaskan king crab leg you have ever eaten has been FROZEN and then WARMED UP?

And many of them are, in fact, pre cooked?

"I'm midwestern raised and it took me a while to try crab"

I live within pissing distance of the Chesapeake Bay, home to the best crab of all, Callinectes sapidus, or the Maryland Blue Crab.

Getting live Blue Crabs isn't a problem in this region. It's like getting live lobster in Maine, or live crawdads in Louisiana.

Rarely does it take more than an hour to go from live Blue Crab to mouth watering, succulent, juicy crab cakes.

Nothing frozen, nothing warmed up.

I know almost all crab I have eaten was once frozen before cooking. I have only eaten fresh crab times when someone brings back a cooler full of live crabs from a coastal state.

I should inserted "probably spoiled and freezer burnt"

Someday when I go visit the area around Chesapeake Bay I'll go try crab cakes at a restaurant of your suggestion. (I'll probably change my tune about crab cakes too)

<ahem>  With all do respect... my ass those are the best.

I've eaten dungee's, in my drysuit, on the taxpayer dime, on a dock in Ketchikan, at 2 am, in February, after coming back from planting (mock) bombs on the Navy, when a loyal citizen, who had just motored in from pulling his pots, ran home to get his propane heater, kettle and a little butter.

That is fresh crab, and there can be no better.

I have to disagree with Mike on that, too.  I've spent more than a few nights on the Melbourne Causeway wielding a dip net, filling a cooler with Florida Blue Crab and giant prawn. They went straight from the Banana River and into my propane kettle.

Ummm...confession time. I've never had crabs (edible or parasitic  smiley). I've never had lobster, clams or oysters, either. I did try shrimp last year. It was weird. Almost tried a crab leg earlier this year, but didn't have the proper instruments to crack it open and extract the meat. I had a hammer and 5 cats. What meat there was after the thwack never even hit the floor.
I think Mike's suggestion of crab cakes would work for a seafood newb like me.

Wow.

Congratulations!

If you go to the kitchen and get a cookie, you'll have a snack, too.

But in your post you mentioned crabs that were almost a whole HOUR old.  I was comparing minute crab with those.  grin

You truly do have reading comprehension problems.

Those are for CRAB CAKES.

It takes me less than an hour to go from live Blue Crab to dead blue crab to picked blue crab to mixed with seasonings and spices blue crab to fried in butter/olive oil crab cakes blue crab to plated blue crab to eaten blue crab.

Get it now?
