Harold,

This is amazing!  I think it ought to be scary too (Orwell and all) but it is too cool to be frightening right now.

I tried Houston (closest big city to me) and it does not have "street view" - is there a list of cities where "streetview" is operative?

And as far as scary and Orwell are concerned... as long as the cameras are aimed at "public" places, not into someone's house, maybe there really is no privacy invasion going on.  I'll be very interested to read other peoples' opinions about this.

Thanks for the "heads up!"

Regards,
Andrew

It scares me.

Big brother is watching you.

It sounds innocent enough, sort of cool in a way.  Next, they will have five second updates, so you can see it live...

What happens if the shot shows a drug deal going down?  Why not make the bust?

What happens if a protest is going on...see where this is going?

The images that make up Google's Street View feature are taken by a small army of drivers with expensive, multiple lens cameras mounted to the tops of their cars. Streets for which Street View images are available show up with blue outlines on Google Maps. Google says Street View is available for major roads in San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, and Denver. More cities will follow shortly, Google says.

I don't think google is putting up the cameras, I think its private individuals sharing their cameras. I could stick one in my office window if people wanted to watch the Union Pacific Railroad go by every 15 minutes.

They should station a sat or two over Afghanistan, open a website, update it every 60 seconds, and let everyone search for Osama and the Taliban.  If Allied forces end up strafing/capturing/killing your find, you get a reward.
If life gives you melons, you may be dyslexic.

This has a certain "cool" factor about it, but would be too easily abused.
And it will be abused.  Down the road we are going to regret this.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

One of my small joys about living in the country is that occasionaly, after my 12th or 13th beer, I like to stagger out into my yard, buck naked, with my pot belly swinging and a cigarette dangling out of my mouth, and hunker down for a good ol' nature crapola like a caveman.

While, for reasons of taste,  I don't think there's much chance I'll wind up on a gay porn website, what if the EPA uses it to come get me and charge me with illegal waste disposal?

That doesn't look cheap or strong.

I bet the project gets scrapped, or changed after some scum either start stealing the equipment, or just smashing it up.

the images are shot from a car mounted 11 camera capture rig that records the data to a huge disk array

the guestimate for the raw data on Washington DC is ~7 terrabytes
