I'm seeing a lot of cases lately where passionate self-righteousness overrides good sense.

Of course it does.  Like committing violence, passionate self-righteousness feels GOOD.  And sadly most of the time most of the folks are will chose immediate pleasure over good sense, even legitimate long term self interest.
