This coming election may very well be the final end of America as it was meant to be.

It has been a long time in the works but this may be the tipping point.

I have dutifully supported what I considered the best candidate and usually ended up voting for the lesser of the two evils for too many years now.

Having to vote for McCain is a tough pill to swallow.

This is probably the first really honerable thing McCain has done since he accepted the nomination.

Unfortunately, the man lost control of his campaign shortly after he accepted the nomination.

Obama's side has done a great job showing the absolute morons that support McCain.
McCain's side has not done anywhere near of as good of a job.

Both make me sick.

It's what Republicans deserve for not nominating a true conservative since, what, Goldwater?  Ok, maybe George Bush the Elder.
I cannot wait for the day when I can vote for a true, conservative republican; not the trash that gets tossed at us these days.

The Democrats are going to win because they nominated a real Liberal; someone democrats can get behind.  McCain is 2008's Lieberman.

McCain is an honorable man and now is not the time to be honorable. If you want to win sometimes you have to fight dirty.

In the next 24 days, McCain must do two things: get voters to have doubts about Obama; and get them to believe that McCain has good ideas, especially on the economy. He can't just go negative. He has to sell himself as well, and in a positive way.

That's a delicate balancing act.

While I think McCain could be more aggressive in going after Obama, he has to be careful not to be appearing to attack Obama personally. That's the job of Palin, the TV ads, and surrogate groups.

I've been reading the Rasmussen polls every day, and there are signs that McCain's negative ads are having an effect.

If you read a dozen different columnists who suggest what McCain should do, you'll get a dozen different suggestions. One thing is certain, though: negative ads by themselves won't work if the candidate doesn't have something positive  to sell the public. Distasteful as it is, McCain's proposal to buy up bad mortgages seems to be having a positive effect, at least among the undecided voters.

Obama hasn't yet made the sale, either, but he's not saying anything specific now about policy, as he has a comfortable lead that may or may not be real (will 5% of those who say they support Obama not vote for him because he's black?).

In the video, McCain seems to want to be the guy with the positive message. If he can be more specific, while simultaneously letting Palin and the TV ads make voters question Obama, he could succeed.

Bush 41 was not a conservative, with, for example, his support for gun laws (he had the chutzpah to blame the NRA for his loss because the organization refused to endorse him.) and breaking of his "read my lips - no new taxes" pledge.

HankB, in the last 75+ years we've had a true conservative (Reagan) in for eight years. That's it. Nixon, Ford, Eisenhower, and both Bushes don't cut it, although I think that GW is personally more conservative than he has shown himself to be in office.

McCain needs to be both positive and negative.  He needs to show the American people what life under an Obama Presidency will be like.  It's not just about mentioning Ayers, Wright, and Rezko--these are names, words--it's about concretizing What Will Change and what Americans won't like.  This is not rocket-science, or shouldn't be, just basic communication.

As for the positive side, McCain can't do that because he's confused and obsessed with bi-partisanship, earmarks, and being a "maverick."  He should have zeroed in the productive middle-class as his natural constituency, offering the people who most create the economy some long overdue breaks, but instead he let Obama and Biden co-opt the appeal to the "middle class."  These guys are anything BUT pro-middle class, but McCain dropped the ball.  That is just plain stupid.  He should have opposed the bail-out/rescue and come up with fresh ideas that would go to the real core of the problem; instead he just looks like another fat cat insider who is part of the Paulson Mafia.

I abhor the idea of an Obama Presidency but if nothing else it will provide us with the drama and the clarity a lot of Americans seem to need, whether they know it or not.

This is probably the first really honerable thing McCain has done since he accepted the nomination.

Why can you call this honorable?  He called Obama a "decent" man.  I don't think you can call anyone with Obama's ties or history within the Joyce foundation a decent man.

Can you give me some top examples?  Other than this threads topic of course.

Campaigns reveal who has done it and who has played at it, who has been clear and who has been confused.

McCain is a one-trick pony, and Obama is the pony in the petting zoo.

But let's blame The Unholy Fifty-One Per Cent that when all is said and done will be responsible for putting Obama into the White House.  The information is out there for those who want it.  Most don't, and if people don't care enough to inform themselves they don't belong in a Republic.  Unfortunately, we are being dragged along in their wake.

meh he's probably distancing shielding himself from "racist" attacks and letting his supporters attack.  I retract my idiot comment.  I strongly disagree with his style though.  If I were to take that route I'd say "I'm aware of his shady associations.  However, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he's a decent man.  You may disagree.  But that is your opinion."

This whole "I've met the man.. I know" ... way to strong of words.

SteveS, he hasn't articulated his ideas well. His proposal to have the government buy up bad mortgages has already infuriated conservatives, and given Obama something else to attack, although I'm certain that Obama is just jealous that he didn't think of that giveaway first.

To a large extent, conservatism at this point means telling people what you're not going to do: raise taxes, pull troops out of Iraq prematurely, create more entitlement programs, let the same government that ruined the financial markets take over health care, etc.

A positive message is much easier to articulate when you're giving away free stuff. And McCain has already promised too much of that.

McCain doesn't really know who his constituency is.  He's aiming at independents and moderates, not the "base."  And he's going to lose if he stays the course.

It's not about being "conservative," it's about being positive, emphasizing support for the best and most productive Americans.  But McCain is too concerned, from my point of view, about "God's children."  He should leave that to the liberals; they've perfected the homilies already.

While he's "reaching out" and compromising and losing, Obama is pushing a no-compromise, non-reaching-out agenda and winning.

While he's "reaching out" and compromising and losing, Obama is pushing a no-compromise, non-reaching-out agenda and winning.

He is winning largely because he is not being called on it (or indeed, on anything) by the commentariat and the media to any appreciable extent, who have pretty much agreed with (if not actively promoted) his theory that he represents change and McCain represents Bush III.

Add this to all the other memes than have stemmed (probably directly) from the Obama camp - "McCain going negative" for instance (despite Obama being negative since day one, pretty much) and the whole insanity of "Coded racist language" (which even the AP claims is true, despite being utter nonsense) - that have been swallowed and then regurgitated by the media and its difficult to see what, if anything, McCain can do at that level to change things.  Even when there is a coherent, fact-based attack on Obama it is either forgotten (David Fredosso, anyone?) or labelled a disgusting smear (Ayers, Rezko, Acorn) by the media, as opposed to the Obama camp.

Short of Obama doing something incredibly foolish such as revealing his actual plans, or McCain winning the debate so obviously even a CBS poll of uncomitted Obama voters cannot declare Obama the winner, or this Berg lawsuit exploding just before the election, I cannot see the media suddenly falling out of love with him in enough time.

McCain has one thing to sell--and it's a huge thing--and that is that an Obama Presidency will gut America, perhaps terminally.  McCain should have hammered on this, in specific terms, for the last three months, regardless of what the MSM thinks of it, in as many venues as available to him.  He should have realized that the media would tar him no matter what and done his best to sidestep them and go directly to the people in as dramatic terms as possible.  So far, for whatever reason, he has failed to do that effectively.  Right now I would describe him as a man who has been unable to completely free himself from the control of Big Media and who still seems unable to completely grasp the essence of his problem.  Faced with a hostile mainstream press he had one shot: appeal to The People.  Problem is, McCain still likes and respects the press, as he seems to still "like and respect" Obama, at least in part, and he is really no populist, just a contrarian whose core philosophy is incoherent.

We will be left after this Election with the inevitable recriminations against the media and growing perplexity about what exactly to do about this.  But the transformation of the media into promoters of socialism/fascism only reflect the deeper problem of the fact that most American cultural institutions have slowly but surely taken over by the Left.

The problem with how McCain is running his campaign is this:  McCain is telling voters what he is going to do to fix this or that........Nobama is telling voters what they want to  hear which has no bearing on what he is actually going to do.....chris3

I hardly consider Bush Sr. a "conservative."  Reagan was the last true conservative.
But, still, your over-all point is valid.

[rant][sarcasm]Absolutely fascinating discussion.  [/sarcasm]

The OP is looking for McCain to be supportive of an ignorant twit in his audience who is assigning an ethnic slur against Obama when she means to be assigning a religious slur (Muslim), which is also not true, and as offensive (if not more).  We now have two pages filled up with how he hasn't taken the fight to Obama.

I agree that he hasn't.  If we had seen two months of the McCain displayed in his last two prominent public appearances, we wouldn't be having this discussion.  He has killed in his last two gigs.  My point is this:  There are issues galore to base this campaign on, but race and religion are not (and should not be) among them.

We have something of an echo chamber in here at APS, and a decidedly conservative general bias.  I've not posted in a few weeks, but to find offal like this is saddening.

Attack the ideas, attack the consequences, attack the policies, and attack his judgement.  These hang independent of his race.  Hell, even attack the choice of his pastor, but do not deny the man's religion.  Based on the Frontline documentary on Wednesday, he actively shopped for Wright, but that doesn't make him a muslim...

And yet, xavier, no one has picked up that particuar ball and run with it now, now have they?

What does that tell you about the echo chamber conservative bias members of APS?

Good point, Mike, and I'll grant you that.  However, no one has called the OP's ball out of bounds, either.  I should have made that the gist of my post.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure that the original poster's comment is a call to support whatever point the woman was trying to make.

It could be interpreted to be that, but it could also be interpreted to mean several things.

Without the OP weighing in again, there's really no way of telling.

If, however, I thought (or knew) that the OP was attempting to incite racial issues, the post would be gone, and likely the poster, as well.

Sure, I could have arbitrarily decided to delete the post, assuming that the OP was pushing a racist message. But, seeing racism in the message without proof, and assuming the OP to be a racist based on nothing tangible, is a quality most closely identified with Democrats, I'm sorry to say.
