A Public Apology
« on: August 30, 2009, 11:41:50 AM »
Hey Folks:

A few days ago, I logged onto APS and found, much to my dismay, a crazy pop-up asking for a user name and password for a website called seebritain2005.com. A quick inquiry revealed that:

A) The website linked to my avatar had begun requiring usernames/passwords;
    and

C) This evidently affected more than just my own login here.

So, to any of you affected by this (and that could be everyone), my abject apologies. Nick1911 has been kind enough to remove said avatar, so the problem should be fixed. Please pardon my interwebs illiteracy.

You should never direct link to anything (it's rude).

Stickjockey, it's considered bad Internet form to hotlink to something hosted on another's website.

Some call it stealing bandwidth.

Many times, if the owners of the hotlinked website discover that images, etc. are hotlinked externally, they'll either modify the content, or set up password protection - like you saw happen.

The forum owner here had many of his images hotlinked to websites he didn't approve of.

He modified the images while leaving the filenames intact.  Much hilarity ensued.  ;)

If I remember right, it was a StormFront type of site, so he swapped photos on them.

Why is it rude?

Every time the image is displayed, it uses bandwidth that the host is paying for. And since the image is externally linked, the people seeing the image don't see the website it originated from.  Because you're using bandwidth they payed for, without them receiving any benefit from it (such as page views, which may support ad revenue), it's considered extremely rude, and some consider it bandwidth theft.

Didn't he swap it for a picture of an armed black couple, something with a text about fighting off clansmen? =D

Okay.  I guess it's time to unlink and time to find a photohost.

Yup.  Something like that.  =D

I caught folks linking to my firearm images and using them as reference material without my permission. In return, I swapped different images into the linked filenames.  Since then, I've also watermarked my images.

G98, et al:  Yes, I understand that now. When I grabbed that pic, I did not understand the implications of what was happening, technologically.

No, it wasn't any sort of rabid antigun site, unless you consider any sort of British site to be such. To me, it was just a site with a cool pic of a Supermarine Spitfire.

Let it never be said I do anything halfway.

I am honestly ignorant of this problem.  It brings up a couple questions.

Why does every forum I've seen offer the option of linking to an image?

Is there a correct (meaning not rude) way to point to the image?

Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, I just didn't know it was an issue.

There are some sights that explicitly allow hotlinking, such as http://icanhascheezburger.com/ and xkcd.com.  These sights will usually have code for hotlinking to their stuff nearby the image.   If they don't explicitly allow it, it's best to assume that they don't and instead use an image hosting site such as photobucket.com, which allow you to upload the images you want to hotlink to.

Yup, always host stuff yourself if possible. I've been doing it that way for years, so I know that my pics stay up and/or don't get replaced with rude messages or porn.
