It looks like the shrinking violets north of the border are too delicate to hear Mark Knopfler's guitar stylings and his lyrical irony.
“Money for Nothing” was ruled by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council to be “extremely offensive” and thus inappropriate for airing because it uses an anti-gay slur..."

It's an honor for artists to have their work banned. It confirms the art has touched someone deeply.
It's the highest artistic compliment (aside from the money).

If Dire Straits overdubbed the words "the little maggot" ( ;/) with something else, they can make it acceptable.
May I suggest "that slut Palin" or "that nazi Bush"? That's about as PC as you can get.

I heard a live version of that song on youtube sung by the Dire Straits or at least just Mark Knopfler (definitely not a cover) and they had changed that line.

Starting at 8pm Friday night, the Edmonton, Canada classic rock radio station K97 will play the recently banned Dire Straits hit, "Money for Nothing," nonstop and unedited for an hour in protest of a Canadian regulator's decision to ban the original version of the song, first released in 1985, because it contains the word "fa---t.."
"We're not afraid of repercussions. We have never had a complaint in the 25 years we have played the song," K97 Music Director Todd James told FOX411. "We will play it in its entirety and unedited as we have always done and if someone wants to file a complaint we will take it from there."

Yeah. When he performs it live, he uses the word "mother" now. That is also the word used in the radio edit.
